Admittedly I haven't been crying out for us to sign him whenever I've seen him play but seems solid enough and has enough experience to hit the ground running.
Not sure who people wanted us to sign as right back..Some people said Coleman but I'm not sure that was ever on the table and would have cost a lot for a player who's only had one or two good seasons...Aurier was rumoured but would have been a gamble.
As I said before, I think Jenkinson will be good enough to make it one day (obviously work needed) so would prefer us to buy an experienced player for a few years until he's ready...Debuchy ticks that box for me.

Personally I reckon sagna has been poor to average for a couple of seasons now, so hopefully Debuchy will be an improvement.
At the end of the day when was the last time anyone was excited about signing a full back? The position needed to be covered and job done as far as I'm concerned...move on...and let's get Sanchez (please).
Sometimes the work is done for you

:rubchin:
In what way? I don't pretend to be an expert on Coleman but he's only really come to my notice in the last 2 seasons...before that he was pretty injury prone I believe...i may be wrong, but haven't the time or inclination to look up his stats...feel free to do so and prove that he has been the best full back in the world for 5yrs....i will happily admit my error. Either way it doesn't really matter...it was never in the pipeline.

For less than £10m more we could have got Coleman who is over 3 years younger for his 70-odd more PL appearances and for my money is a miles better full-back than Debuchy. If we wanted a short-term solution we should have just extended Sagna's deal last year and given him a bit more money, huge net saving overall and Debuchy is no better.

I always used to laugh off the suggestions of bias towards French players in the early part of Wenger's reign because the likes of Vieira, Petit, Henry, Petit, Pires etc were class. Bias towards French players was a great advantage because we had far better knowledge of France and there was fantastic value there. Now every top-flight club scouts in France and the selling clubs have far higher expectations. It's not that the quality hasn't been there - Chelsea have picked up some quality Ligue 1 players in Cech, Drogba, Essien, Hazard - but you have to pay a fair price for them which we don't want to do.
No chance of getting Coleman for less than £10m mate, and anyway he has just signed a new contract at Everton.

I agree though Debuchy is very underwhelming.

1989 - less than £10m more I said fella (i.e. less than £20m).

Silus - it was never in the pipeline because we never tried. We'll only ever go for players who clubs are very willing to sell. We could bully Everton into selling any of their players as long as we are willing to pay a fair price. If we went in with a bid for Coleman and he made it clear he wanted to go Martinez would happily sell for £15-18m and back himself to pick up a very good little-known energetic replacement for less than half of that.

Coleman is just one option - I'm not saying there aren't other great options out there in whatever price bracket and tbh I watch barely any foreign football - but Debuchy is one player I've seen plenty of to know that he is a bang average player.

Debuchy is younger than Sagna, and plays for France in front of him. So it cant be a bad signing?

thats a lot for 11million, and does nothing for the club post wenger.

i hope he can cross better than Sagna. personally i would have gone for that american kid.
Yup! he is going to be worth a lotta wonga in 1 - 2 years time...has Huge Potential...

I'm not saying Debuchy is necessarily the best option...In fact I must have seen him play a lot and not really noticed him (might be a good thing for a defender though)...but the price is being quoted as between 8 and 11million. It is a lot but if it's 8 m and we get four years it's not that bad is it? I struggle to see any better option at that price.

We may well have been able to get Coleman but as you said it'd cost 15 - 18m (personally think that's a bit conservative..probably 20+)...and I don't think he is worth it (just my opinion).

If we had gone cheaper we would be looking at the risky/one for the future type.

It may be a waste of money or it may turn out to be a bargain...I'm not exactly out celebrating the signing but not dissapointed in it.
Sorry for being slightly positive people...i promise to go back to miserable bastard mode if (when) we fuck up the Sanchez transfer.

It isn't so much about him being younger or in front of Sagna for France, the French manager may not have made the best selection - that is an argument many French Fans are or rather were having, for now the jury is out on whom is better between the two players - some might say they're on par - which if true means that wenger is failing in his job (again) - Wenger should be looking to "improve" the team (in all areas) and so he should be looking to buy a player who is both younger and better than Sagna - which means spending proper money - wnger always seems to be doing his buying at Lidl instead of John Lewis or Harrod's - which is where chavscum & $hitty do their shopping...The argument has been that we haven't had the financial clout because of the cost of the new stadium - but that little excuse is now gone and yet wenger continues in his supermarket trolley dash.....Ozil was an enforced buy - the board 'made' him buy the player...wenger must have had sleepless nights after seeing £40+ Million go out of the Arsenal bank account.

We MUST buy Sanchez - and that means not f*cking about making derisory offers - like he did with suarez - THAT was just embarrassing.

Oh yes...one more thing

So we may not get Sanchez after all. Juventus wants him so will wait on sale of vidal to Utd. So Vidal will be sold to make funds available for Sanchez' purchase. Sanchez' sale will make money available for Suarez' sale. Domino effect? I will bewatching this one closely. Looks good for Barca Juventus n Utd. Doesn't look good for us or liverpool

Btw, how do we see Sanchez as our CF? Are we happy with that?

As for Debuchy I dont think he is as bad as most of us hete think.
