If he leaves, I hope he goes abroad.
It's not Sagna leaving which worries me. It's us not replacing him. A few well-known truths:DB10GOONER wrote:TBH I'm not going to lose too much sleep if Sagna does go. He is a good defender but going forward he offers us nothing. He is terrified by the mere thought of trying to take on his marker and always checks back, and 99.99999% of his crosses hit the leg of the first defender or go out on the full on the other side of the pitch. He is getting on in years, and has had two broken legs so let's be honest, he isn't going to get any better. If we could teach Jenko some defensive skill and discipline I'd have him in there as he can cross a ball a million times better than Sagna and is at least willing to take on the oppo with the ball at his feet.
Now before the Sagna-whores on here set their vaginas on fire, I'm not saying Jenko is the finished product, or that he is a better defender than Sagna (he currently isn't), just saying we've seen the best of Sagna and he is slowly slipping downhill.

- The club takes ages to tie up any signing
- The board + manager are reticent to spend money unless they have to
- The above two points are exacerbated in World Cup years for some reason
Sagna is still solid defensively and clearly Mertesacker is comfortably playing next to him. He is, however, complete gash going forward. His crossing is dreaful and made even worse by the fact half of his attempted crosses are from ridiculous positions because he will ALWAYS check back or aimlessly lump a ball rather than take on a one-on-one opponent.
But if he goes the board will either not sign a replacement, sign a sub-standard replacement or sign a replacement at the expense of another much-needed recruit.

- Let Sagna go, thus saving £80k p/w on wages.
- Promote Jenkinson to 1st choice, give him another improved contract on £50k p/w.
- Promote some kid to be Jenkinson's understudy.
Job done.

For me it would be another reason to play 4-4-2. Giroud isolated up front without anyone to knock our hoof ball onto and without the pace to run in behind is fucking stupidity of a biblical level. Added to this the fact that both our backs are gash at going forward and extreme gash at crossing, plus the fact we have a quality finisher in Pod and it would make sense to employ 4-4-2. Of course there is no guarantee that Pod and Giroud would click as a partnership but surely it has to at least be tried?augie wrote:officepest wrote:Internal solutions 101:northbank123 wrote:It's not Sagna leaving which worries me. Express claiming that sagna only on 50k per week - a disgrace if true![]()
Am wondering if we played 4-4-2 with proper wingers would people be happier to stay - I think defensively he is second to none but I agree that he is crap going forward so if you took that responsibility off him would we see a much improved player and would fans perception of him change ? Of course he would still be expected to get forward on occasions but he wouldnt be the primary source of width which he is being asked to be now
