That is a good point re the automatic qualification although they will be up to 48 teams by then so it will hardly matter - you can always rely on FIFA to fuck things up. It's hardly a surprise that they won when you consider the option of Morocco as the alternative. Christ if England went up against Morocco it might even have gone to England.

The only chance of getting the WC back here would be a joint Britain and Ireland bid which would probably be successful but all the fuckwits in the respective FAs would still manage to cock it up somehow.

It may not have escaped your attention but the Russians pretty much have an army waiting for England fans, so why would any sane football supporter want to go there facing the same sort of hostility as in Marseille. If the Russians and Britain had better relations at all levels we would have swamped the place.

Nobody cares who takes the most fans to Russia and it really isn't a safe place to be an Englishman these days. Having traveled (US spelling for your benefit ) to Russia myself it really isn't an enjoyable experience as it still feels like the cold war is in operation. However, how many of the applications for tickets from the US are for people living there who actually support a different nation? I would suspect quite a few and given that the US didn't qualify the point is really quite irrelevant. As soon as your nation start calling football by it's correct name, I will start treating the US as a footballing nation.

I used to remember getting me wallcharts, World Cup magazines etc etc, and yet I do not feel the same about it as I used too...
Maybe because I remember it as a 16 nation tournament, you had to be worth your salt to qualify...
Then FIFA fucked it up in 1982 in Spain with groups of three in the second phase where England who had not lost a game were eliminated.
Then it went up to 24 teams now it is 32 teams, and they are going to increase it to 48, it's crazy, far too much football in ones summer break, they will have to increase the squad numbers to 46, as the potential risk to injury will not go down well with clubs...
That fucking smarmy Italian in charge needs to be strung up, along with those stupid Federations, madness and greed rolled into one...
