SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not sign

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

not a player I would fancy cannot see how he would fit in but Arsenal need to show some face with the shambles so far of the promise of early world class signings so I expect we see him red and white by the end of the week

Same as that - emile heskey part 2 imo and we certainly don't play the type of football that will suit the guy

I've changed my mind - i don't think Wenger is a tight wad - i actually think he has been trying for years to sign big players but they dont want to play for him, and in fact want to leave (RVP, Cesc et al). He just can't close a big deal. He has been the loser on every major transfer negotiation - can't keep the ones he wants to keep and can't get the ones he wants to get.

Even if he eventually signs someone this window, once again we will be left with an underprepared off season. We will probably just get another smattering of deadline day free transfers.

PS Im normally an optimist.

I would quite like Benteke at Arsenal, can see him benefitting from Cazorla's through balls and Theo's cutbacks.

But a friend of mine made a point during the last home game of the season.
For the first half of the season it was Michu who got a lot of press, then he faded.
The second half of the season it was Benteke who was one of the highlight reel stars.
With either player, they have had a good season.
As you suggest, Heskey had a good season once, (so did Carroll).
There are question marks over both potential signings.

I would much rather go for Higuain, who is my top choice out of the strikers we have been linked with.

AM as in Present tense not past tense mate 8) :barscarf:

Was watching sky sports last night and they were doing their usual crap of filling slots with old events and last night they were showing the highlights of our 97/98 double season :barscarf: Did you remember that dion dublin was top scorer in the league that season ? I certainly didnt but it reminded me once again of andy warhol's "everybody is famous for 15 minutes" remark - being top scorer in a league for one season is good but doing it year in and year out proves quality. As things stand we dont know if benteke is going to be a flash in the pan striker or if he is gonna kick on and be a didier dogbreath striker that will terrorise defences for years to come :rubchin: What I will say with absolute certainty is that anybody manager that agree's to pay the massive asking price for him up front (as opposed to x amount of money after so many goals/so many appearances etc) is fcuking mad and I certainly wouldnt want our dckhead to spunk money away on him this summer (maybe next summer if he has another great season)

One thing I think we all believe in is that we currently dont play a style of football that would even play to the guy's strengths. Havent we all seen enough of wenker buying players and then trying to turn them into something they are not ? :x I believe in so many ways we actually need a darren bent or remy signing more than any other striker - we all complain that as a team we are too pedestrian and pass sidewards far too often so isnt signing a striker with real pace to run in behind a real need ? I know that wally does bring speed to the table but with the greatest will in the world, he doesnt always know where he is running and doesnt have the intelligence of physique to play that position as things stand plus it is far too easy for defences to freeze him out of games. Bent and remy have proven themselves to be goalscorers over a number of seasons and I am all too aware that bent has been awol for the past 12 months but he has hardly featured in a villa side who are trying to get him off the wage bill by squeezing him out. I certainly think he would be worth a punt especially as their desperation to get rid will probably see a price tag that will only be about half of what we paid for the forehead or giroud
