F1 safety campaigner Sid Watkins dies, aged 84
The F1 medical delegate saved the lives of many famous racing names

By Gavin Allen

The Formula 1 safety campaigner Professor Sid Watkins has died at the age of 84.

Prof Watkins was a renowned neurosurgeon and for 26 years was the medical delegate for the FIA and its on-track medic - first on the scene of many high-profile accidents.

He is credited with saving the lives of many top racers but lost his great friend Ayrton Senna, who he had advised to quit before his tragic death in 1984. Prof Watkins retired in 2011.

Here are some of the tributes from famous names of F1

@rubarrichello: 'It was Sid Watkins that saved my life in Imola 94.great guy to be with, always happy...tks for everything u have done for us drivers.RIP

@BSenna: 'RIP Prof. Sid Watkins. Sad news for us who stay behind.'

@AlexBrundle: 'I've played a lot of football with my Dad. I wouldn't have if it wasn't for a bloke I never met called Sid Watkins. Never got to thank him.'

Thatcher won't die. She will just shape shift to become Cameron's successor.

R.I.P Aditya 'Romeo' Dev.

2'9" and ten stone he was the world's smallest bodybuilder.

I was watching some youtube about the fella just recently. One of those people that make you smile actually.

He had an aneurism diagnosed in 2008, and it was a case of when he would have a stroke, not if.

God bless his soul.
