Exactly mate- they've been getting phased out pretty much since the PL was conceived, and definitely since Euro 96 made football "fashionable". The trouble now is that those who are left are getting more and more bored of the watered down atmospheres and the dull, predictable, very expensive "product" and so there are less and less people in the ground who want to do something about it. The german lads had the right idea- as soon as clubs tried ripping the piss they protested and resisted change. For us its more difficult, we have the stigma of hooliganism and the general publics opinion is that football fans are yobs, an opinion shared by the police, so proper fan movements are harder to get going. I've said it several times, we should have campaigned harder against all seater stadia (Hillsbrough made that difficult, again public opinion regardless of the facts are against the fans on that one as a result of the disaster), should have protested when people started getting chucked out for swearing (football was always a place to have a release at the end of a hard weeks work, now its like a fucking library), we should have campaigned against £30 tickets, now people are finally moaning a bit at 50 or 60 quid ones, its all a bit late.Barriecuda wrote:The "working class" (use the term loosely) people who made the game what it is, are now being phased out to make room for the richer families looking for their next Sunday kick, no pun intended. It's like someone walking into your home that you've lived in for 30 years and then criticizing how you do things and forcing you to change them to suit their needs.DB10GOONER wrote:I agree with our Mackem mate.
I'd add that the total control that Sky Sports is trying to obtain over the packaging of the PL abroad is influencing the clubs also. They want the sanitised facepainted families singing jolly old songs of support and clapping politely. They don't want pissed up Percy and Rebel there singing about the fact we all know ‘Arry’s momma takes cash for anal! It’s the way the modern game is going.
Really sad stuff; what people love and are passionate about is slowly being taken from their grasp and given to people who's interest is probably passing at best.
Still, I'll watch this movement with interest to see how they get on, really hope they succeed but I think football has already gone too corporate and too far away from the traditional fan to ever be taken back, at least until the bubble bursts and the wankers with their 4 wheel drives who turn up with the kids in facepaint decide to fuck off and do something else with their saturdays
safcftm, you see what's going on with Wolves v Sunderland this weekend?

Yeah mate, its an interesting idea but I'm not entirely sure if it will work. For a start, most people going to the game will know nothing about it until they get to the ground- even then there will be enough people who dont know about it that i cant really see it being silent. Then theres the trouble that we've just sacked Bruce and look set to get O'Neill, people are actually enthusiastic again and will be going down buzzing and full of drink- it'd be great to think they could see the bigger picture (although how much effect this protest could have is debatable) but tbh I reckon a lot of our fans will think that theyve paid good money to go down, have traveled a fair distance and are actually in a good mood and so want to make a noise, especially since the lads need to pick up points and need our support. Hope it happens, but I think our lot will be noisy and theres wont be much quieter than most other games, football fans here simply arent any good at organising and carrying these things out, although i'll be happy to be proved wrongM-50 wrote:safcftm, you see what's going on with Wolves v Sunderland this weekend?

Yeah fair points mate. My fingers are crossed for them anyway. At least it's a step in the right direction and fans are stepping forward rather than holding back.safcftm wrote:Yeah mate, its an interesting idea but I'm not entirely sure if it will work.
