And that is part of the problem. A defence has to be extremely well rehearsed in zonal and extremely disciplined for it to work. Human nature is to get attracted to the danger, the runner or the ball, to get dragged out of the zone. Regarding the zonal marking, I still think you need a few runners. What we used to do was cover the posts and then place 3 good headers in key positions and then have a few run-trackers. Giroud is really underappreciated in terms of how many crosses he nods away at that near post. Sanogo just got dragged out of that position for Saturday's goal, although to be fair you can understand him trying to act on the danger.
