Wayne Rooney 'angry and confused' at treatment by Manchester United
Wayne Rooney's Manchester United career appears to be over. Rooney is understood to be fuming at comments made by United's manager, David Moyes, at the weekend which suggested he was now regarded as a second-choice striking option behind Robin van Persie.
Rooney has taken that as a personal slight, having given nine years' service at Old Trafford, and is "angry and confused" about his treatment.
The offending words were delivered to journalists during a briefing with Moyes in Bangkok last week. Moyes said: "Overall, my thought on Wayne is that if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie we are going to need him and I want as many options as possible."
It has been widely interpreted as Moyes stating he regards Rooney as an understudy to the prolific Dutchman and, understandably, that has gone down very badly. A source close to the situation has highlighted Rooney's unhappiness. As far as the 27-year-old is concerned, he is at the peak of his career and has no intention of playing second fiddle to anyone or being reduced to the ranks of a squad player.
With four Premier League titles and a Champions League winners' medal to his name, Rooney does not believe he has anything to prove at United.
Yet he feels as though he has been put on trial by Moyes at a time when he should be concentrating his efforts on recovering from the hamstring injury that saw him sent home from United's pre-season tour within hours of landing in Thailand on Thursday. "Wayne is confused and angry", said the source.
United are aware of Rooney's feelings and once Moyes and the chief executive, Ed Woodward, wake up on Wednesday morning in Sydney, they will come under pressure to clarify their position.
Woodward said last week that he was relaxed about Rooney's contract situation, the striker having less two seasons to run on his deal. "There are no contract renewals that are being discussed," he said. "I am not sitting down with any player on an extension and there is no trigger date in the diary. Would we be afraid to run a contract down? Of course not."
Arsenal and Chelsea are potential destination for Rooney, whose future has been the subject of intense speculation throughout the summer, triggered initially by Moyes's predecessor, Sir Alex Ferguson, leaving him out of the Champions League knockout match with Real Madrid in March.
Ferguson subsequently claimed Rooney had asked to leave United, something the player vehemently denies. Moyes has continuously stuck by the club position of Rooney not being for sale.
"Unless I was speaking double Dutch last week," said Moyes on Friday, "we said Wayne Rooney is not for sale." That was a response to the cheeky assessment of the situation by Chelsea's manager José Mourinho earlier in the day.
"From an ethical point of view I can not speak about other team's players," Mourinho had said. "But I won't speak with hypocrisy. It's not in my nature. I always speak what I think. "He is a player I like very much but I can't say much more. He is fast and direct and I like him. But he is a Manchester United player."
In an interview with the BBC, Mourinho added: "If Wayne is a second-choice for Man Utd, then the national team will be affected."
Barcelona, meanwhile, are willing to sell Cesc Fábregas to United because the Spanish champions need the money, according to a highly placed source in Spain.
While United have yet to hear back from Barcelona regarding their £26m bid, the club believe that Fábregas wants to leave the Camp Nou owing to a number of factors that have made the midfielder discontented since joining from Arsenal in the summer of 2011.
The arrival of the Brazil's Neymar in a £50m transfer from Santos in the close season has pushed Fábregas further down the pecking order of attacking players headed by Lionel Messi, the world footballer of the year, and which also includes Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Pedro and Sergi Roberto. Fábregas is also believed to be unhappy at not being played in his preferred position regularly by Tito Vilanova, the coach, and there is a sense at United that as Fábregas was signed by Pep Guardiola and so was not the choice of Vilanova, the 26-year-old will continue to struggle to play in Barcelona's biggest games.

Agreed. I'd rather Suarez or Higuain than Rooney - he wouldn't settle and would be angling for a move faster than you can say granny shaggerBournemouthRED wrote:Rooney has to be the biggest *word censored* going. He's never happy, he's like a child.

It takes us 62 days to wrap up a transfer. There are 47 days left in the window. We are fucked.

I disagree. This latest episode isn't a money but a playing issue. I think Rooney has been badly treated in the last couple of seasons by Man United and would be the perfect signing for us - certainly less risky then either Higuain or Suarez - and well worth paying big money for.g88ner wrote:Agreed. Agreed and for me he is the one out of the 3 I would prefer, Suarez is a very good player but totally nuts and already on a ban and higuain is an unknown in the pl, Rooney is absolute quality and would thrive being the main man again and am sure would live to prove a point.I Hate Hleb wrote:I disagree. I don't really agree he's been poorly treated. Cried they weren't signing good enough players, then cried because they signed one much better than him. Last year they cantered to the title, were well on course to knock Madrid out until some dubious reffing and threw away FA Cup quarter-final - not as though Rooney's role wasn't vindicated.LeftfootlegendGooner wrote:Agreed and for me he is the one out of the 3 I would prefer, Suarez is a very good player but totally nuts and already on a ban and higuain is an unknown in the pl, Rooney is absolute quality and would thrive being the main man again and am sure would live to prove a point.I Hate Hleb wrote:I disagree. Bloke clearly has some issues with fitness and work ethic if reports are to be believed. Miles miles miles better than anything we have but don't for a minute think we'd get anything like his best consistently.
Re: SUMMER TRANSFERS - Deals, Rumours and Buy/Sell Wish List
Rooney for me too,a no brainer, suarez has a million game ban,we'd be out of everything by the time he can play, higgy is unknown but Rooney for all his bad points does know where the goal is and one big factor is he's a WINNER,something we currently lack in abundance, shame it aint never gonna happen
