Yep, its the cult of personality that exists with Wenger. There are a large faction of fans and pundits who are prepared to elevate him to a level he is not even close to. For instance, Martin Keown said post the Liverpool match: '‘I’m struggling to remember a more tepid performance in the last 20 years under Wenger. There was a lack of spirit and fire in their bellies.’rodders999 wrote:Definitely agree with his.Wilson wrote: All the Wenger lovers loathe the fact the next manager will have a rebuilding job. As they always believed the first manager post Wenger would come in and cruise on Wenger's coat tails
When Wenger came in he inherited a top class keeper and one of the best defences ever assembled in the game. He had an absolute lethal finisher in Wrighty and a world class player to compliment him in Bergkamp.
Only the midfield needed an initial overhaul, the bones of an exceptional side was handed to him on a plate.
What's the new guy gonna get handed? Fucking helmet head in goal (I saw a stat this morning that said 20% of the entire amount of goals he's conceded in his whole career have come in just the 2 seasons he's been with us) and a back 4 that would give you nightmares. Maybe, just maybe, Kos and Bellerin could be saved by someone who would actually coach the team but everyone else needs to be dumped.
A limp dick midfield swamped with dross, each one a pathetic clone of the next, you could sell them all and barely notice the difference. The only 2 top class players we have can't wait to get the fuck out the door in the summer and when he lays his eyes on the striking department (the greatest attacking unit Wanka has ever assembled....according to himself anyway) - Giroud, Lucas and Welbeck the only question he's gonna ask himself is -
Where the fuck do I start???
Really, so this was a one off and mere blip on Wengers high standards. Or have we not lost games by these margins in the past few years, let alone 20 years. Man City 6-3, Chelsea 6-0, Man United 8-2, Bayern Munich 5-1, Bayern Munich 5-1 , Barcelona 4-1. Barcelona 3-1, Southampton 4-0, Everton 3-0, Liverpool 5-1, AC Milan 4-0, Chelsea 3-0, Chelsea 3-1, Man United 3-1, Monaco 3-1, Man City 3-0, Tottenham 5-1, Liverpool 3-1, Chelsea 3-1, Aston Villa 3-1, Mancheter United 3-1. And im sure there a few more that escape me. Now it might seem a bit harsh, although I believe 3-1 is a beat down. 2-0 is well beaten, but 3-1 is a put down, as conceding 3 goals in a match pretty much ensures defeat, as you dont see many 3-3 draws.
Why does Keown have to say he is struggling to find a more tepid performance in 20 years, when youthe 5-1 hatched job by Bayern, was less than a month ago? Is Keown just ignorant, or is he pushing the cult of personality by speculating these type of performance are a rarity, as like he says, he is 'struggling' to recall a more tepid performance in over 20 years.
For such a hard defender, he really is a piss weak pundit.
