If spurs offered over 16m in the summer what makes us think we can get him for 10? I think its time the board start answering some question to us mugs who pay them. Is there money in the bank or not? We all know 10 million for arshavin was never going to be accepted, and hopefully it was an offer to 'start things off' before going back with a bigger better offer.

still a pessimist augie, i just believe that arshavin will sign this week , zenit have said that there is no one else in for him and the guy can walk away next season on a free so it makes sense, now if wenger could only get given, upson and someone for the middle then i would even been happier

Zenit St Petersburg are ready to sell Andrei Arshavin to Arsenal.

A Zenit insider revealed to The Sun: “Negotiations between the clubs about Arshavin are continuing.

“Since both sides want them to be successful, we should expect a good outcome soon — and certainly before the end of the transfer window.â€

Obviously not coming to the Arsenal, or else he would be learning French!!

I agree with Rebel, that we'll probably end up signing him, but it'll take till near the end of the transfer window - Zenit need to sell a player who obivously wants to leave and who can buy out his contract on the cheap but with us starting the bidding so low, their incentive is to wait to see if they can do better, including by using a stalking horse like Man City to squeeze more cash out of us.

I can't see Arshavin going to Man City - of course Zenit would prefer to sell to the club offering £18m in one go rather than the club offering £10m/£12m in staged payments, but the key element isn't what Zenit want, it's what Arshavin wants. He's 28 and knows this is his last chance to spend a few seasons in one of the top leagues to establish his name. He'd have preferred to go to Barca or Chelsea or Milan but we're now his best bet, even with the question marks over whether we'll be in the CL next season.

Man City can only offer cash: they may well sign a load of stars this summer but there will be no European football before Sept 2010 at the earliest, and even that depends on the stars they may or may not sign knitting together and a new manager doing the business quickly. So Arshavin would be going on 30 before Man City could even think about European football.

Of course, he could go for the cash at City, but I doubt he will, not because I think he's an angel but because I think he knows he needs to prove himself. He'll presssurise Zenit into selling him to an established European name, and at the moment that means us.

Am really having mixed feelings over this deal though rebel - on one hand I would like to see a player of his quality, age and experience join but on the other hand I am really really concerned that we may well be blowing most if not all of our transfer kitty on him when we clearly have other major needs. Sadly we can all forget about signing shay given and unless the shammers are in total financial meltdown there is no way that we will get upson cos of cost issues (isnt it always  ). Saying that I dont believe that we will sign any centre half unless we sell the stroppy gallas

Agreed. As Wenger said in December, he's going for two midfielders, one creative (alternatively withdrawn striker) and one defensive.

Earliest I can see new defenders and goalkeepers being thought about is the summer.

next summer should see a bigger upheaval in the squad all right, cant see gallas and tweedy staying and hopefully almunia will want to return to spain , but this is arsenal and arsene wenger and he does see huge potential in the squad which most others cant
wenger knows come the summer or wenger out, we wait and see
