Retiring shirts is an american sports phenomenon imo. They use the numbers from 1 to 99.
Football is mostly number 1 til 11, so if you retire numbers from time to time there will be only numbers like 52or 23
on the field. Such things don't please me. I am against retiring numbers.
Numbers worth retiring are 1 to 11 and 14 imo.
Every other number are shit numbers and worn by shit or average players.

Retiring numbers is silly.
What happens after the number is retired? - is that the end of it... do we only get to see it in old footage? or gathering dust in a glass case at the museum?? - and how exactly is that showing respect??

I WANT to see the famous number 10 shirt on the football pitch where it belongs!... creating history! not banished from the football field forever.
Thanks to Dennis, the famous number 10 shirt now carries extra weight and importance - instead of banning future players from wearing it, let them try and live up to the great man. Hell, one day we might have another great number 10, and then the wealth of history and importance of the number will be even more impressive.
In any case, I'd imagine most kids in Argentina dream of pulling on the number 10 shirt for their country because it means so, so much. Why ban them from that possibility??
Football moves on, and although I'm all for respecting our history, I think we should be embracing our future just as much. In other words, the number 10 shirt stays!

has anyone noticed the factfile on arsenal.com has new centreback scholananan or whatever his name is down as squad number 6! that must mean hes first team ready right?
i mean i know senderos had it before but it was only the late signing of gallas that stopped him from playing.
maldini retired recently and they retired his number 3. i think only in circumstances like that, he wore it for 20 years i think, no one will do that in this day and age so i wouldnt think itl happen much. i mean with them they cant imagine anyone else wearing that number as he was there so long and won everything over and over again. they might have a few more with nesta and inzaghi e.t.c.

I read somewhere that the shirt will only come out of retirement if one of his sons (both playing in the youth team at AC Milan) break into the first team.leahy wrote:has anyone noticed the factfile on arsenal.com has new centreback scholananan or whatever his name is down as squad number 6! that must mean hes first team ready right?

As much as i love Bergkamp and feel very honoured to have watched a player like that play for Arsenal retiring his number is plain stupid
