Whilst not the player he once was, Pires was still pretty awesome in his own right during his final season with us.
He scored 11 times in 32 starts in 2005/06, so better than one goal in every three games. Not bad for a midfielder, and eclisped Hleb's pitiful seven goals in his three seasons with us.
Additionally, Pires was still a key player in 2005/06. Made some great assists, and still had excellent link-up play with Henry.
And then there was the monumental tackle on Vieira at Highbury that's still talked about to this day...

I was at that game

I thought you might mention his goals record that season, which was rather outstandingBring Back Pires wrote:Whilst not the player he once was, Pires was still pretty awesome in his own right during his final season with us.

I can only go on my feelings at the time, and based on the form of the players going into the final, I remember being a little surprised Reyes was dropped and that Pires, Hleb and Freddie all got the nod.
Pires is my favourite all time Arsenal player, but I wasn't surprised he was subbed in the final, and I also wasn't surprised he left the club that summer because I just felt he was on the decline and was becoming more and more a bit part player (with the younger Reyes and Hleb coming through)... which was one reason I was surprised he started in the first place.
Absolute legend!!!

Pires was definitely on the decline on 2006, I'd agree.
But Pires in decline is still far superior to nearly every other player that's graced an Arsenal shirt SINCE 2006.
I thought he was easily Villarreal's best player in the CL games against Arsenal last year. Probably not saying much, but he's still got it. I'd have him back in a heartbeat, as you may have guessed by my username.

No matter what the thread, no matter how obscure the subject matter, you just have to mention the same old subject. In every post you make you talk about it.

Pires was something else. I totally agree that Hleb should have been taken off but Pires will always be one of the players that were just magic.
I never ever liked Hleb I just didnt see what he contributed.
In the current team Arshavin has along way to go before we even talk about Pires and him in the same breath.

Just read the whole interview. Its a pretty good read. He confirms Cesc threw the pizza at Alex Ferguson
and talks a lot about his love for Arsenal and Highbury (when he went to his flat there the other day he 'was almost crying, thinking about the pitch now being a garden'), even saying after the reception we gave him for the Villareal game he thought maybe he should have never left
Ah he is so lovely.
Also in the same magazine JET talks about his mercedes and his addiction to shopping, going to Knightsbridge 'at least 2 days a week'
And a nice piece with Chamakh who seems like to a top bloke.
