Song or Essien ?

Song is more of a "Sitting" midfielder who's main talent is his tackling, but who will charge forward several times during a game and can play a decent forward pass. This season he has played a bit higher up the pitch than last, but cannot be described as an attacking midfielder.

Essien is an all action midfielder who's main asset is his workrate, but who can tackle too, can bomb forward and does get goals.

Essien is better than Song but Song is much improved on the player of two seasons ago.

With all due respect quartz that is absolute garbage - he is absolutely shite at tackling hence the number of cheap yellow cards he has picked up in the last couple of seasons  Song's main "aseet" is his interceptions but essien at 50% still pisses over song every day of the week and only a fool would think otherwise which might explain this thread
Song gives away quite a lot of free kicks by going for tackles/body checks that he should not go for, but that comes with the territory for a defensive midfielder "forced" to be as active as possible because he is playing in front of a defence that is not as good as fans would like.
He can tackle well, tries to tackle often and is physically strong.

He is one of the best tacklers in the team.

True, though I reckon that smaller players like Cesc and Wilshere "punch above their weight".

I really was not keen on Song when he came into the team, but the last couple of seasons have convinced me he deserves a place in the squad.

Ideal world I would like to see a top level defensive midfielder next to Wilshere, (perhaps Annan?) but "Song - Wilshere" for me is a surprisingly effective partnership in the middle of the pitch.

Was talking to a gooner mate of mine on Monday night about the very same subject.
We both agreed that Song is our most under rated player, and we would'nt swap him for Essien, nor any other def midfielder we could think of. :barscarf:
Now I am neither the most forgiving or complimentary poster on this forum, but I wonder what Song has to do to finally convince his critics on here that he is the business; strong in the tackle, eye for a goal, difficult to knock off the ball, and now developing an eye for a pass.
I think he is top class, and as we have seen throughout the season, we look a far lesser side when he doesn't play. :barscarf:

Cesc would probably make a better manager than Wenger.

We agree on something, for the second time only

Maybe if Augie actually bothered to tape our games that are on when he is at work instead of not bothering to watch them he could see what Song does :D (which last night would be to warm up along the touchline)

Your right we do look a lesser side when he doesn't play but that's more about the fact we have absolutely no depth in that position than the fact Song is anything special....It's a bit like only having one goalkeeper (Almunia) and saying we look a much better side with him in goal rather than Eboue....

Song has progressed into a decent/good player and i would no longer classify him as a liability as he was when he was thrown in the deep end in the 2008/9 season. But i have no doubt if by some miracle Wenger went out and bought some real class in that position we would become a better team, because we would have real quality in there not because a decent option is better than a shit or no option ...

Doesnt really matter who is agreeing with them cos they are both wrong 8) Bergkamp-Genius hit the nail on the head when he stated that it is pointless to proclaim song to be a great player on the basis that we are not as good a team without him cos when his only competition for the dm spot is denilson you know how shit bare we are in that position

As for sid's assesment that song is top class........ :coffeespit:

He's not a defensive midfielder, Augie. You've gotten caught up in modern terminology. Do you use the terms 'week-in, week-out', 'step up to the plate' and 'good feet for a big man'. He's a midfielder, and a very good one !
