Just looked at wiki but it doesn't say whether Lennon is protestant or catholic....but he did play gaelic football for the school which I guess would fairly much guarantee that he is a catholic. He also supported Celtic as a kid.

The Edinburgh clubs Hearts and Hibs are like a mirror image "lite" version of their Glasgow cousins, Rangers and Celtic...... Hearts are seen as the protestant club and Hibs are catholic (they also play in green of course). Not sure whether there support is equally split on those lines, but I have seen both play and can't recall there being a particularly sectarian nature to songs, flags etc.

this is religion

Hearts are staunchly Protestant ,Hibs majority but not exclusively Catholic.

Lennon is Catholic, from County Armagh I think and yes a Celtic man through and through. Religion is used as an reason/excuse for the hate and violence that mars the Old Firm fixtures. But what is Religion ? Surely it can't be used forever to justify either side's madmen. Do these people actually practice the religions their hate is suppose to repersent.?
I live in Dublin where people get all misty eyed about Celtic, I heard Liverpool and Man U "fanatics" say that when their sides played Celtic in Europe they couldn't decide who to support...fuck sake the same morons have no problem watching Utd or Liverpool thrash an Irish League team in a pre-season friendly wearing their new season shirts.
How could Celtic and Rangers ever play in the English Premier League ? I know my post is a rambling mess, but so is the whole Old Firm thing. I hate it and can't buy into the bar stool Celtic thing that blights my City and it is the same in Belfast for both sides. If it's more than football then take the football out of it, it cannot be worth it. Saw a TV programme about it recently and it's horrible, the parts we didn't realise like the domestic violence when men go home full of sour drink and still fired up for trouble. Like the A&E departments where Doctors and Nurses are subject to all night abuse.. Take the football out of it, approach UEFA or FIFA for help , get one of them playing in a seperate league, I don't know but it's mad..

Fair play to augie, digger and onebard - the only three sensible posts on this thread.

Neil Lennon deserves to be attacked? Have mail bombs sent to him? There really are some low brow fucking idiots on here nowdays.

As stated Lennon has done no more than Moron, Pulis, Rednose and Mr Knows. Should they be attacked? Mailbombed?

Of course Lennon should be more careful and low key given the fact that he is being targeted and has a family to worry about. But to be targetted like that because of sectarianism is a fucking disgrace no matter who you are or what side of this stupid fucking pointless divide you are on.

Anyone that is involved in sectarianism is a fucking lowlife arsehole.

pat nevin summed it up well on five live recently.

Neither club are making inroads in europe,

joining the EPL ain't going to happen,so all thats left to keep
the fans interested is to turn in on themselves and ramp up the hatred to give themselves the old firm games to look forward to.

who would want to go and see celtic falkirk/hamilton four times a year?

point about domestic violence is a good one.had a belfast mate who
recalls coming home late after an old firm game to see all the husbands/male partners sleeping in the front gardens as the women had locked the front doors......

In fairness i dont think anyone has claimed that lennon deserved to be mailbombed or attacked, only that he himself hasnt helped the situation by constantly adding more fuel to the fire.

just playing devils advocate for other peoples views here, i havent really been following events or have much of an opinion and i certainly have little interest in what excuses the jocks are using to tear each other apart nowadays 8)

My son's football manager is scottish and turned up the other week in a St Mirren shirt. Turns out that he was a celtic fan as a kid (as was his dad) and followed them all over the place. But he never liked all the religious crap that went along with that and a particular old firm match at Ibrox finally made him decide to give up on celtic and support his local club instead.

In one breath you say Lennon shouldn't have been attacked,(which he shouldn't,and I for one have never said otherwise),and then in the next you say that Thompson should have "Kicked the shite" out of the fan!!! A bit hypocritical!!!
Just for the record,I have never said Lennon "deserves" what he gets,I do argue however, that he doesn't exactly help the situation with some of his antics!!!

well I never mentioned your name but it hit a nerve so read into that all you want.

as regards to the fan he crossed the line so therefore its a completely different situation after that! it's all grand throwing jesters to and fro but when someone comes in and swings for you everyone is well in their rights to defend

You never hit a nerve mate,I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't tarred with that particular brush,as discussions on this issue,in general, and this subject in particular, tend to very quickly descend to the "Tribal",and there,in microcosm, lies the problem.

The rivalry between hearts and celtic may not be 'religion' based, - more geographic and a more recent 'loathing' (a bit like us and brum/stoke et al).

But Lennon isn't shy about winding up rangers (and other managers & fans) and even though he is simply doing what he was brainwashed into from a child....as are all the supporters of the different factions (religions/clubs), he is in a position to help change hearts and minds.....alas it is something beyond him, just as it is the person who attacked him.....

Scottish Football is Shyte as is Religion and as long as people are unable to let go of the past and the many wrong things done in the name of religion there will always be hatred and violence at every opportunity

How often do we hear the various representatives of the different relgions / churches bang on about how it is wrong for violence to be done in the name of a religious belief etc.... As long as they insiist on holding to the belief that 'theur religion/god' is the right one, they can have no credence....

IF there is a God (and we all know it to be Bergkamp!) then that God is surely the god of all and everyone...

Scottish Football = Bollocks

Religion = Bollocks

I could be very wrong here onebard but I think neil lennon is protestant not catholic which is why the northern Irish fans turned on him for playing for Celtic and if I am right I would guess he would not have been brainwashed as a child with all this bullshit. Of course I could be wrong on this but we are all agreed that religion has absolutely no place in sport and maybe until the scottish authorities start taking serious action against the old firm clubs (points deductions maybe ?) this bullshit will not stop :(

That being said I still dont believe that lennon should be posted as the villan here - as somebody has already pointed out, there are a lot of examples of managers in the premier lge who go out of their way to wind up opposition players and supporters without anybody questioning his conduct. Should lennon surrender to these thugs who threaten him ? Like him or loath him you would have to agree that they guy never shirked a battle as a player and I dont see him being any different as a manager

I think it deplorable that he and his family should be threatened mate.....

The thing is the 'old firm' situation has always been a tinder box just waiting (some might say hoping) for a spark to set it all off.....and the recent games and set to's between the managers has done just that.... and that's the opportunity for all the TOTAL IDIOTS to start acting like feckin' terrorists....

Scottish Football is still SHYTE!

Lennon seems to be from the same mould as Cloughie and Martin O'Neill - should be Arsenal's Governor, instead of that arm waving french prick on our touchline each week
