I have not voted.

I have no idea how the upgrade will affect the Forum, the link for information on the upgrade does not work.

If someone is able to explain how an upgrade would benefit the Forum I can then make a decision.

Quartz, was it one of my links that doesn't work, if so which one?

As far as everyone else goes, I can't reply individually but I should say something considering I started the whole can of worms.

The main objections seem to be "it's fine as it is" and "I like how it looks now".

I can say that it's not fine as it is, that's not a rational view. As I already said way ^^^, it's a very old software version, it's liable to get hacked easily, and it's way down on features. An upgrade wouldn't remove any existing features or functionality, it would only add new features and work better.

As for how it looks, actually I think there are aspects of the theme that could be improved e.g. logo at the top, but that's not important. After an upgrade, I or whoever would theme the new version to look very similar to what we have now, with all the red etc. There's no reason why the new version would have to look *radically* different, except for obvious improvements.

So we have a lot of what us IT geeks call FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt). There's no reason not to do this, I don't understand why people are scared that it will be worse. You'll still be able to call Wenger a *word censored*. Millions of people worldwide use phpbb3, I'm sure the luddites here can deal with it.

For some examples of sites using phpbb3, see:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewforum.php?f=46
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/index.php
http://forums.southparkstudios.com/forum/
http://forums.pearljam.com/index.php

As augie suggested ^^, I will happily volunteer to build an OG phpbb3 site, probably with everything except posting (to keep new threads in the existing phpbb2), and then if people are up for it, I could do a migration. Obviously for what I'm getting paid, I could only spend *so much* time on this, but I do believe it needs to be done and will be a big benefit to the forum.

You're on quite the crusade antgel...

I have no FUD (hilarious by the way   )....just that I do like the way it is now because it seems unique. I have looked at those other sites and they do look significantly different. Can the site not be made more secure and keep the look the same? Is the security a big issue (shit, we might lose some posts....HELP!

It seems that this site does not offer enough, let's say, "gadgets" for you geeks, like the craving for miniscule upgades to an ipod. But please accept that it's just that some of us like the way that this is laid out, and it's just a football forum, not a toy. You write something, make a happy or sad face, then submit it...

 8)

I'm not on the crusade as such, just trying to inform the clueless^W^W^W esteemed members of the forum. ;)

I don't intend that the look would vary greatly. Anyway you lot don't really *love* the look, it's just what you're used to. Indeed, a bit like the AKB. Oh, the irony, on one hand you lot want change, on the other you want the status quo.

You'll still be able to write something, make a happy, sad or :banghead: face then submit it. But there will be more options to make the experience better for all. Using this forum is like a relic from 2000.

I already said I can make a sort of demo site with the new version, people could go and have a look. If that's not good enough, you can all fuck off.

(NB The poll is still *pro* upgrade. ;))

It was a technical link that did not work antgel.

But I think you should go and make a demo version of the new Forum, and then people vote on that.

I very much like the look of the Forum as it is, because it is easy to read, easy to spot different posters, easy to scroll through threads.

Please don't tell us what we like and don't like. And unlike the management at Arsenal, this forum is performing well.

I understand what you're saying, although just repeating it again is not going to further your arguement.

Why don't you fuck off the official forum and change their "look"

:barscarf:

Clearly you don't, excuse me for repeating...

.

And the security *is* a big issue. If the forum / site got hacked and (worst-case) deleted there would be a right panic, and massive work for the admins. Hopefully there is a backup but still better to be pro-active.

I didn't *seriously* tell you what you liked or didn't like. But it's impossible to dislike something you haven't seen, and it's hard to argue that you like the way it is, for any other reason than habit. Having said that, it's moot as I would theme it to look similar (as pointed out above).

Can someone post some tits FFS?

I think antgel is a spud or a manc trying to implement this so he can then start a huge irish gooner like take over of the forum. Don't fall for his plan!

Actually I think it's a good idea. If it could also be set up with the script that allows you to use the touchbb app on iphones would be good. Apparantly it's very simple to set up.

Most forums are blocked at work but not this one, would any new version be potentially blocked?

Same here.

If I can't access during work hours you fuckers are left relying on the shit mod (IHH) to sort out any problems and we all know how fucked that will be!

If and when I get an okay to build a demo version of phpbb3, we'll see. The short but unhelpful answer:
"It depends on which basis they are blocking sites."

Indeed. I find it painful to use this forum on my mobile phone, it's too old to have a mobile-specific view.
