I know it appears that we are split down the middle on the whole bringing in of new players in jan and I know that we have since reclaimed top spot since rebel penned this thread but for those of you that like me want a new keeper I ask this question -

is robert green still in your thoughts as a good prospect ?

I never wanted him and was pleased to see him fcuk up for ade's goal yesterday. I only seen the highlights so dont know if he had a good game overall though so am wondering has he harmed his chances of coming to our club ?

WE HARDLY TESTED HIM AND HE DIDN'T REALLY HAVE MUCH TO DO EXCEPT PICK THE BALL OUT OF HIS NET A COUPLE OF TIMES. 8)

PERSONALLY, I THINK HE WOULD END UP LIKE ANOTHER RICHARD WRIGHT - LOOKS GOOD WHEN MAKING PLENTY OF SAVES (WHILST AT THE SAME TIME STILL CONCEDING 3 GOALS!!). YET BEING ARSENAL GOALKEEPER REQUIRES SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

THE FACT THAT WE GENERALLY DOMINATE GAMES MEANS OUR KEEPER MUST HAVE EXCELLENT CONCENTRATION, AS HE MIGHT ONLY HAVE ONE OF TWO THINGS TO DO DURING A MATCH. IT'S A DIFFERENT CRITERIA ALL TOGETHER BEING IN GOAL FOR A MID-TABLE/STRUGGLING TEAM THAN ONE THAT IS CHALLENGING FOR TROPHIES.

On this topic, I agree with you. We can and should spend big on a man between the sticks.

Robert Green is seriously overrated. Good shot-stopper but error prone, especially on high balls. In what is a weak English generation of keepers, I'd put him behind old man David James and even Scott Carsson. I pray we don't waste our efforts on Green.

In my order of preference, better keepers we could go for (next summer I assume) would be: Buffon, Cassillas, Friedel and Given.

However, I don't expect Wenger to sign anyone of that quality. He believes in Almunia, for reasons beyond me. It's the one area I would really criticise Wenger. And if he did go for a top keeper, he'd also have to sign a replacement for Almunia, who wouldn't accept going back to No2.

Sorry to disagree but it's Almunia for me. He's not perfect - but who is? Wenger has built a team of which England's No 1 in waiting is clearly a well-accepted member. Mad Jens equally clearly was not. I think we must not undervalue the team ethic which is driving these guys forward. They have something to prove minus Henry. Let's give them the chance to do it for themselves; at the moment they look capable to me.

englands number 1 in waiting ?? Are you having a laugh    I like taking the piss on occasions at englands downfalls but seriously almunia being keeper for england is about as likely as paul robinson ever winning the worlds top keeper award. You need to have a little chat with yourself in the corner mate

Actually the idea of having Almunia as England's number one tells more about the English goalkeepers in the league than Almunia himself. Is he really any worse than Robinson, James or Carson? Would anyone here like any of those three in our squad instead of Almunia? Quality wise, he deserves no less a chance to be England number 1 than any other English goalkeeper.

true what you say about the quality of english keepers this day  but to say almunia is up there is just not right, he's a capable num 2 and shouldnt be num 1 at the top club becos he's not good enough, and yes he's done well this season but i dont trust him and he tends to be rash in coming out and catching isnt a srong point either, good shot stopper but thats all,
but theres not a lot out there at this time for sale so wenger trusts him and i guess he's here to stay

Yeah its true that hes not world class and has a habit of rushing out of his spot which has cost us goals in the past and a couple of occasions this season. But like you said he has done a good job for the most part this season and if this form continues, theres no reason why he shouldnt be England quality (whatever that is lol).

And as the saying goes, "beggars cant be choosers" lol.

Almunia's a team player and a nice guy but he's just not good enough. As well as the rushes of blood, his reactions aren't too quality and will never be as good as Lehmann's. The number off goals Almunia concedes at his near post is shocking.

Although I'd still rate James and Carson higher, I'm quite happy for Almunia to be considered for England because the alternatives are poor but Arsenal can and should demand a higher quality.

Almunia's done well this season but has still cost us important goals (eg, both the goals we conceded to United). He's a back-up keeper and no more. Why do you think he's never even been considered for the Spanish squad?

If he plays for Arsenal and he qualifies for England then I'll back him!

Not the greatest but our best available option it seems and we have had worse.
