Good Evening Everyone (UK)
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP PAUL REACH HIS £25,000 TARGET. THANK YOU.
With Just 10 days left until Challenge Emirates, as we write, things have been very different this week and the recumbent had to receive emergency Repairs. Fundraising total to date has risen to just over £800.
This Week - Training, Fundraiser Tickets and Team Hybrid come to the rescue, again!
Training: The weather has been changeable all week, we've had rain, snow, sun and hail none of which has put Paul off from training. Unfortunately due to a funeral on Monday there was no training, on Tuesday Paul was forced to return to the gym because another tyre on the recumbent had worn out right down to the lining, Solent Cycles replaced the tyre and Paul was already to go on Wednesday, thank you guys you're great and have done Paul proud again. Tom from Solent Cycles also put the wheels and push rims for the 'WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE' back together after a repaint so thank you Tom. Back to the recumbent on Wednesday all was not well with Paul so he completed just 150 laps and ended training stating things just didn't go well and he thought best (reluctantly) to retire for the day. Back on the road and hills today Paul enjoyed every minute of training but then as he was nearing the end of the training session the lower bearings started to make a grinding noise and it got worse as he went on, this was very worrying for Paul as we are now so close to the challenge so he rand Mark at Team Hybrid, Mark asked us to take it in to the workshop at 3:30 so we were down there on time with Paul quietly worrying about the outcome. Team Hybrid removed the handles and the bearings and discovered that the none drive side Bearing was a bit seized up but after a few adjustments the bearing and handles were reassembled and the machine was up and running smoothly once again. Team hybrid came to the rescue once again despite being extremely busy they managed to get Paul up and running again, these guys are fantastic, they are both professional and courteous at all times and make you feel important, they certainly have our vote of confidence in all quarters of customer service. We recommend these guys so if you have wheelchair trouble or need attachments for your wheelchair to be converted to become a motorised wheelchair, get in touch with them via their website www.teamhybrid or call 01329 832068. Thanks guys.
Collecting: Arsenal Football Club have allowed us to collect on Saturday 29th March at the Manchester City game, Paul along with Save the Children volunteers will be out and about on the podium outside the stadium so please donate what you can afford to help Paul reach his target of £25,000. With Just 2 days left until Challenge Emirates, Fundraising total to date has risen to just over £1371.
FLASH - This Week - Training, Challenge in doubt as Paul falls ill!
Training: With all medical supplies almost exhausted and training gear worn out It's been another difficult week because the velodrome was shut so Paul had to train solely on the roads and hills but we've had a scare, the pollution that came over the UK on Monday got on to Paul's chest and by the evening he started coughing, he continued training on Tuesday and Wednesday but on Wednesday he became really unwell and found training very difficult. When Paul arrived home some 4 hours later he was exhausted, aching and really low putting the challenge in doubt! However, after a good nights rest Paul has pulled through and with today being a rest day he should be ok to do a quick 20 miles light training session tomorrow. We've come a long way and it doesn't seem that long ago when Paul was gearing up to take on Challenge 300, God willing Paul will be feeling great by Sunday and will take on the Emirates. He's done over 2871 miles on the recumbent to prepare himself for the 100 miles challenge, I would think he's prepared himself well and despite the slight set back this week he is ready to go. I'd like to say that despite Paul being unwell I suspect that he wouldn't allow this to get in the way of the challenge but yesterday was touch and go so we're pleased he's feeling better today and lets hope he continues to strengthen as we approach Sunday.
Come Along: Anyone who is able please feel free to come along on Sunday to cheer Paul on as he takes on the clock, he will start the challenge at 9am and should be finished by 4pm at the latest. There is an after challenge function in the Drayton afterwards to which you are all welcome to come along to. We appreciate the support you have given Paul and the team over the past year, your generosity has been fantastic without it we could not raise the funds for Save the Children. Thank you.
Collecting: Thank you to Arsenal FC for allowing Paul and his team to collect at the Emirates before the match on Saturday 29th March, in the 1 hour 45 minutes they collected £405.95.

Re: [Charity] - Paul Smith (In Wheelchair)
On Sunday at 9:05am Paul set off on his gruelling 100 miles around the outside of the Emirates Stadium to be completed in 7 hours! Not only did Paul complete the challenge he did it in style by finishing in 6 hours 7 minutes and 44 seconds, well ahead of the target time of 7 hours. After 50 laps we had a scare, Paul's right shoulder was giving him extreme pain so he had to pull over and have medic, Alan, work on it for a short while, after which he set off again only to pull in for more treatment several laps later. After another session of treatment he was off battling against the winds but was soon in again for more treatment, after he set off that was it, no more issues with the shoulder but he was struggling with his chest which he had been doing for the previous week. There were quite a number of people watching Paul take on his challenge including Alun Francis and Caroline Lemmon of the Arsenal Disability Liaison team, it was nice to see them there and we were grateful for the support of the crew and other friends that made it down to the stadium in such windy conditions. The crew were kept very busy standing barriers up several times which the high winds kept blowing down on a regular basis. At the end of the challenge Paul admitted it was really tough and Alan Manning, Medic, thought he may have to withdraw Paul in order to save anymore damage to his shoulder. Paul being Paul battled on to the end and it was great to see him finish such a gruelling challenge against the clock and the high winds. Most of us got wind burn on our faces, Paul just got on with it despite the chest and shoulder problems. Mike Morley was Paul's pace setter and really kept Paul going throughout the whole challenge, he acted as a pace setter and wind shield all the time as well as safety on one part of the stadium because some people wondered on to the track time and time again, still no accidents so that's all that matters at the end of the day.
THANK YOU:
We'd like to thank ALL of our sponsors outlined below, the crew for supporting Paul and everyone who was there to keep Paul going. Without any of you Paul would have found it difficult and without our sponsors the event would never have happened at all so we really are deeply appreciative of each and everyone of you for having the confidence in Paul and supporting his efforts. We have not reached the target for the fundraising set at the beginning of this challenge but we are very grateful for the donations that people have made, the just giving page mentioned below is still open so every donation is still welcomed, shame we couldn't reach £5,000.
We would like to thank each of you personally but are afraid we may miss at least one person out so we hope you will excuse us by making a block thank you to you ALL.
What's Next? Well most of you know that in April 2015 Paul will take on his most difficult challenge ever by pushing himself up Gibraltar Rock on the 'WHEELCHAIR OF HOPE', those of you who have been to Gibraltar will know that the roads are extremely steep, we don't know the percentage of the gradient but will attempt to find out and let you know in updates from August 2014. We hope you will be with us for this spectacular journey and one which may mark the end of Paul's fund raising challenges.
