Alan Hansen to retire from Match of the Day

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Will still end in a row, with the pissed up Dunphy stomping off in a huff.
Dunphy's a tosser who knowws nothing about football. yes he wrote a half decent book three decades ago.

watching him during the EURO's and World Cups is just cringing. thank god for Sky.

Garth Crooks has to be the best example of the drawbacks of positive discrimination at the BBC ever - guy achieved nothing in football AND he can hardly speak. as bad as Barry Venison, if not worse.

Alan Green i used to HATE commentating on the radio when Arsenal were playing, especially against United. fawning Wanker isn't even from there. :cussing:

I still like Hansen, but tbf it went downhill when Lineker went from Guest to Host, he just has no Charisma on TV - or in person. ( I did his ex-missus Michelle's cousin Jane for a while when i was 17/18) he's a boring smarmy :censored: in both.

Shame tbh. Always liked Hansen, very knowledgeable and articulate and has a great understanding of the game. MOTD will be weird to watch without him.

I rarely watch motd and I almost always skip the analysis these days but I do in a way have sympathy for the pundits. Nowadays they're competing against the internet for its analysis and because motd producers are pressured into giving roughly equal coverage to every match the time slots become a constraint.

People talk highly of Gary Neville but essentially what sky do is give him a big screen and 45 minutes before matches to analyse till his hearts content. The BBC don't have that luxury so they have to keep it brief and provide a soundbite narrative to the game which never entirely fits to anyone who watched the whole 90 minutes.

Having said that Lawrenson is a grade A wanker and the BBC coverage of the world cup was laughable. Shearer: "I dont think anyone knows much about this Japan team to be honest" - it's your job to find out you cretin!

I think you're selling Neville a bit short there though tbh. It's more than just the format. Neville's main thing is he get's it right. If his ex team mate Piglips makes a howler he calls it a howler and explains why. On the Beeb or ITV it would be "He'll look at that and think he could have done better" or some other bland non-offensive non-accusatory statement. Also Neville REALLY understands the modern game, having played in it at the very top level. Most of the Beeb/ITV pundits range from 80's throwbacks with no real indepth understanding of the modern game (Hansen, Lawrenson) to idiotic soundbite monkeys trying to show how clever/funny they can be on TV (Savage, Crooks).

Hated Neville as a Manc player but rate him as the best pundit around. :|

Neville's ok as it goes but I think this castigation of other pundits is a bit unfair. Many people watch programmes like MOTD to be entertained and they have a small amount of time to give a bit of insight and get the overall feeling. The insight's a bit shit at times but so is the endless wish to discuss tactics, formations, stats...   ... :D

This clip sums up Hansen and MotD in general. 'The thing about Rio ferdinand is...'

Can't wait for the sour faced twat retires from MOTD.

He says that we continuously defend like during the build up to the red card today, and then to confirm the point shows footage of us while we're chasing a point against Villa and Pienaars breakaway goal from that Everton game back in 2010 :?

Lazy, clichéd analysis. :banghead:

The point he was making was that at one nil up, last man back was Arteta and he was some 15 yards inside the palace half and that there should be a man behind him on the half way line. If we had a man there arteta would not have been chasing back as the man on the halfway line would have been in front of chamakh. On that point he's right. Just remember chamakh cleared the corner from inside his own 6 yard box, yet was still able to run in acres of space, had it been a top striker then they would have been clear before they crossed the halfway line. Both Dortmund goals came from our corners. In a tight game against citeh, chavs, lpool n utd they would kill us on the break. I don't usually defend Hansen but he has made a very good point in a flaw of our defence which has not been rectified.

We have defensive frailties - Wenger likes to concentrate on having a mass of attacking midfielders.

In other news today the sun rose and set on time.

Yeah!!! Now PLEASE Just FUCK OFF ASAP. :D

Hated donkey *word censored* neville when he played for manure - will NEVER forget how he kicked reyes to pieces when we lost our unbeaten run....mind you that was more to do with the utter incompetence of fergies gimp bitch mike riley...who is now (unbelievably) head of the referee's association/training/board thingy.

but as a pundit donkey *word censored* tells it like it is.

edit: he's still a *word censored*

Actually that isn't 'quite' true, I spoke with God (aka:Denis Bergkamp) and he said that the sun was a tad slow on the ole sinking into the west bit of his game today...But was certain things would return to normal tomorrow at sunrise!

:D :D :D :barscarf:
