Centre back

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

He either doesn't know how to coach or isn't particularly bothered at being prevented from doing so as we run round like an U12 side.

Anybody who thinks that he is just biding his time until Wenger goes is completely kidding themselves. He has bought into Wenger in a huge way, Wenger would never appoint anybody other than a puppet as his number 2 and Bould fits the bill perfectly.

He has never worked other than under Wenger and this idea of him challenging Wenger and stories of him getting players by the scruff of the neck is just utter make-believe because it's what people want to hear.

Some of the vitriol on here for far bigger legends than Bould for a few "be careful what you wish for" comments is fucking laughable when this bloke is held up by some as a martyr.
100% agree NB :barscarf:

I sometimes wonder if AW has the greatest 1 to 1 persuasive ability on the planet when he seems to be able to mesmerise individuals so completely, never mind what he has done to the fans.

Back to the CB thing though i'm not completely convinced it is just the players being bad i think it is the constraints placed on them by the zonal marking system as well. Anyone can see the flaws and limitations on of ZM, well anyone but our manager that is :banghead:

I agree with that. I would say though that whilst it ain't a good thing it is a very understandable thing that Bouldy's biggest motivator is earning a good wage. You throw a million quid (I read that somewhere...?) a year at most people and they will suck a certain amount of dick. :(

Spuddy (according to REB) will even do it for free!

A centre backs job is to stop the ball getting past them to the goalkeeper, not be bullied but rather be the bully. The only kicking skils required is to either pass it 5-10 yards to nearest midfielder or to kick it clear of goal either up field or into row zz. No pissing about with tiki taka shit on the edge of the box. The goal against column is your key measure. If that is greater than the combined total of your two/ three main strikers than as a CB your not doing your job.

Which central defenders are people thinking then? If you're talking a hard nut, someone 'Premier League ready' who can get their fucking bonce on the ball once in a while when we have a corner.

There aren't many options out there.

I've mentioned elsewhere players like Ashley Williams, Van Dijk, but also could consider Cahill or Zouma from chelski, Smalling from United, Skrtl from Liverpool. Players who may be attracted by champions league football if we finish 3rd or above. I'm sure there are plenty of players in Spain, Portugal, Germany that could step into the Premier League but decent centre backs are becoming a rarity.

But who would we replace him with??!!!! Be careful what you wish for! We could end up doing a Leeds!!! :whee:

Did I miss any? :-P
Portsmouth.

The minute Wenger leaves we'll enter administration and plummet down the leagues where we will forever tread water in league 2.

But at least the manager - whomever it may turn out to be - will know and do "Tactics".

Zouma from the Chavs - is the drogba version of a CB - except that he doesn'e whinge, moan and roll round like a soggay vagina - well that and the fact he is injured should make him a shoe in at Arsenal!.

I would love to see the stats at how many goals we concede from shots outside the box, we must have the biggest concession as all of our centre halfs turn their backs on goalbound shots. A centre half's job is to charge the ball down from the narrowest distance not to turn their back on it like cowardly, spineless wankers.

I really can't stand any of our current centre halfs, Kos, vastly overrated, BFG, slow, cowardly, Gabriel, just shit.

Gunner Rob wrote:the point is it no longer matter WHO Wenger buys.

he will either not coach them, or he will ruin them by overplaying them.

last season we conceded 35 goals in the Premier League.
this season we have already conceded 33 goals with six games to go.

do you remember how all the AKB's spent the summer saying how we would be so much better defensively now that we had bought Cech?
how is that going then
I read a Metro article in January claiming Cech had already earned us an extra 12 points this season.
Utter crap as we will never know if Ospina would have made those same saves.
The claim by John Terry that Cech would be worth an extra 12-15 points is looking over optimistic.
We had 75 points last season, with 6 to play we are currently on 59, so still work to be done to be on a par with last season. I suppose you could argue that Mert & Gabriel have cost us about 10 points this season.

A keeper is never going to be worth 12 points (unless replacing somebody truly abysmal of which we've had a few!).

We were "lucky to have" Fabianski and Alumina was "world-class". Not my words, NB; the words of top gear magazine. Or Arsene. :?

I think De Gea has kept United well up the table by great saves and last minute saves.

True but 12 points? Compared to the standard of keeper United would otherwise have?

Basically saying that United would be level with Bournemouth if they had Romero.
