Lads if you haven't already do yourselves a big favour and get a copy of Frank McLintock's autobiography "True Grit" I have read loads of Arsenal books but that is one of the very best..Clash wrote:Well said mate. For me Frank is the blueprint when it comes to Arsenal players and he stands alone. The 1971 double was the best of the lot because it was done in an era when football was at its toughest and most competitive.
Of course I also love the likes of Adams and Vieira as captains but they came after McLintock. Frank was the first of his kind at the club and he sets the standard for the type of leader that all Arsenal teams should have (but will never have again).
And while I am not a fan of statues for players ... if you are gonna have any at a club like Arsenal then its disgusting that there isnt one of Frank McLintock

Re: Players who understand what it means
As a kid growing up I loved O'Leary as a player but once his voice became recognisable on TV I developed a strong dislike..He once wound Robert Pires up after a game at Elland Road, when Pires reacted O'Leary ran to an Irish journalist (loose description) and moaned that Pires had insulted him at a time when his (O Leary) dad had just passed away..
I think he had a chip on his shoulder about Arsenal in the end...He couldn't contain that in the media or on the touchline as a manager.. He was on Goals on Sunday one morning and he was so boring.. Overdoing his enthusiasm for everything.
Niall Quinn may be a nice guy and that is part of his problem.. He is too nice... Cannot stand listening to him on Sky..How the fuck did he get that gig?

Agree with whoever said champagne Charlie Nicholas on the previous page. His time at the club never lived up to the hype but anytime you hear him talk football you can tell he's arsenal through and through.

Enjoyed his trumpet style celebration of another goal in the AC Milan 2nd leg.

Yes Don Howe a great Arsenal man no doubt.
Couple of unsung Arsenal men imo Paul Davis 351 appearances good player and Arsenal man, could give it out as Cockerill would remember
He may of only played 149 games for us in total but Jens Lehman I would class as an Arsenal man, hated losing and visibly upset when we did,no cuddling opponents afterwards swapping shirts or over friendly behaviour.Used to go around London in his Arsenal tracksuit on days off if the legend is correct.

IWWW8.
Encapsulated my love of football as a kid. Nobody will ever match him for me. Even all these 'working class heroes' at top clubs now have been getting their arses wiped since they were 12 years old at the academy.
Remember that documentary at Highbury when they introduced the school teacher who he thought had died?

I think this thread is really about the modern day footballer. It's not just Arsenal look at United lol. Paying higher wages than us and getting totally shit commitment from many of their big stars.
Last 10 years have all been about wages and less about loving the shirt across the board.
Mind you not so long ago Henry showed players how to wear the shirt with pride then left when we had to play kids due to stadium finance
