I think a lot of stuff posted here about Gazza is heartless and mean spirited.
The guy is an alcoholic and a wife beater - but at the same time has always been mentally ill. A lot of the background is here in this article, particularly the death of his friends younger brother aged ten from being runover while crossing the road.

You wouldn't criticise someone for having cancer so why do it with mental illness?
As for that post questioning whether Gazza was any good - that's just ridiculous - Spurs were a big club in 1988 when he signed. That's like saying Stanley Matthews was shit because he played for Blackpool and not Man. Utd.
This comment is beyond ridiculous....
And don't believe anyone who tells you he was the greatest English player of his generation either.
Are you telling me you would rather pay good money to watch Geoff Thomas, Carlton Palmer and Andy Sinton?
And part of the reason why he never signed for other big sides was because they were well aware of the fact that he was a loony toon and didn't want the baggage.
His goal versus Scotland was one of my greatest moments in football and anyone who tries to conduct contract negotiations via a Teddy Ruxspin bear as he did at Spurs deserves to be applauded as a comedy legend.
Had he played for Arsenal and not Spurs you'd no doubt have a different opinion of him, as did those who gave him applause at Martin Keown's testimonial.
