Racism in Milan (12/3)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Read your article Lucy im sorry your trip to Milan was ruined by Bigots!
let me start by saying I have no religous stance. and I heard some distasteful chants on the flight home from Milan about Hitler etc etc, Its come to a point that we need to tell our own to sit down and shut up unless its Constructive! The whole point of being a supporter is you support your team and slagging off the other mob doesnt support our boys!

on the y word! Arsenal fans labelled Tottenham fans that and they sing to show mtf

You need to lock yourself in a room

Lucy, I am afraid that if what you heard in Milan has offended you as much as it seems to have judging buy the long post that I have just read, you need to lock yourself in your room and never venture out into daily society again!
Ever since I started going to watch Arsenal back in the early 80s I have been hearing all the anti Spud chants including the songs about hitler being a gooner and all the rest of it.
Arsenal football club have grown enormously since then and now have somewhere in the region of 150000 members (and rightly so), with this huge support, no matter what you say or do, it is impossible to irradecate the problem of attracting a very small handfull of what you regarded to as mindless idiots following our team whether it be at home or away, How long have you been watching Arsenal, this is not something that has just happened over night.
Arsenal fans have a great reputation home and abroad compared to a lot of other English teams, so for you to pick up on a few people chanting songs that our fans have been chanting for the last 30 years, it seems to me to be a little over the top, and just a topic that you picked to give you something to write about.

I went to the Milan game. I didn't hear any racist chanting (apart from one idiot the row behind me at the match). I was on a tram though that got smashed up by Arsenal fans from town to the San Siro. They smashed up the lights and then the windows so the tram had to come to a halt - and we had to walk the last mile. They then proceeded to ask any of the Milan supporters for a fight whilst calling them all 'c*nts'.

I was so proud to be an Arsenal fan at that time.

Lucy - apologies, I stand corrected.

I’ve just been talking to my Indian mate and he said that it wasn’t quite true to say that there was minimal racism in Milan. He asked me whether I’d noticed the continued chants from the guy behind us about “I, Tie’sâ€

OR MAYBE JUST A LITTLE TOO SENSITIVE.

I MEAN, ALTHOUGH I DON'T USE THE 'Y' WORD BECAUSE I'M AWARE OF THE EFFECT IT HAS ON FELLOW GOONERS, AND HAVE NEVER RESORTED TO THE 'HITLER/GAS CHAMBER' TYPE CHANTS BECAUSE OF THEIR CRUDENESS, IN ALL SERIOUSNESS, WHO IS GOING TO GET INSULTED BY THE WORD I'TIES OR THE CHANT ABOUT STICKING A PIZZA UP YOUR ARSE? :?

Ok TheOne2Smooth. For the 2nd time today I stand corrected...and more confused than ever....

Race = "a human population considered distinct based on physical characteristics".

So "I Ties" and "pizza" references are not racist in the strict definition! Nor is frog, wop, yank, paddy, gooner, sweaty (unless someone suggests that this is a physical characteristic of the Scots!!).... etc.

But this also brings me to a point my son continually makes. People calling him a ginger is indeed racist. So woe betide the next person who makes this comment at a match.... !!

We really are in to PC gone mad now, aren't we? Stick your pizza up your arse? Surely that is banter, not racism. I have red hair and regularly get shit about it at work, I give a bit back at any northerners etc - it's just banter.
