The annoying singing of former players names

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The fans who got up to Derby for a Monday night game at the end of a season in which it is virtually certain we'll finish no higher or lower than 3rd, and against a really poor and already relegated opposition, can sing about what they like.
Sing what ever they like? what even 'Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspur' if they so wished?
Enjoying a nostalgic rendition of songs about Bergkamp, Wright, Vieira and Henry is exactly what late season games are about when there's little competitive interest.
This singing of former players names has gone on all season - I recall it against Prague earlier this year.

And I don't recall in previous years this happening with meaningless end of season games

Old players names are often sang in europe. It was only when we were 5-2 up that the old player names were sung, mainly for a light hearted party atmosphere. You don't have to sing them when they're sung.

The Rocky song has been done to the extent that it's cheapened it as a tribute.

But now they're doing it with players that are not only alive and well but could possibly score against us in the Champions League or sign for a rival Premiership club in the future.

Can't we come up with some songs for existing players?

Can't we come up with more songs about Arsenal?

Do any other clubs sing about former players - i.e. United singing about Ruud Van Nistlerooy or Beckham, Chelsea about Robben or Zola?

There were never any chants about Brady or Charlie George in the 80s, or Charlie Nicholas and Sansom in the 90s.

I think it's my 20,000 new comers since 1990 trying to act as if they have been here for many years when they weren't.

You're talking rubbish there Cus, I'm afraid. There is nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia when the game is up and everone is in a party mood. I really enjoyed singing the names of some of the greats (and Perry Groves). As for a dig at newcomers, grow up - not everyone is a newcomer.

We do need more songs for our current players but singing songs about our ledgends is better than not songong at all.

I can't believe this! We whinge because so many people won't sing and now whinging because they do sing!!!

I know that is a bit off your point Cus as you are refering really to what they actually sing, but with my experiences at some of the home games this year I'd be fucking delighted if the people around me were singing the poxy Beatles back catologue just so they were singing something...

I actually like to hear/sing the old songs because it demonstrates our history and tradition. I bet you don't mind "Good old Arsenal..." do you? How many ex-players can the chavs or the spuds honestly sing about and keep a straight face? Maybe two or three each at best? We should be proud of the legends that have played for us.

Fair enough, I don't want to hear those old player songs every minute of every game but that hasn't happened, has it? A healthy mix of old and new is what I say, just like our marvellous away support did at Derby. 8)

With the exception of the Rocky song - that is a tribute to a player who had his life cut short I think it is incedibly disrespectful. I was there and Ade has the away end a look when we were (not me) singing TH14 song etc.

Really off I thought. Yes we are not playing the best football but really that is not on!
