£60m? where did that figure come from :? Having seen the financial figures floating around this forum a couple of months back, I think it's much more likely that the club has around £20m available for transfers..that would also be expected to cover the players wages. Therefore, I think it's reasonable to expect the club to bring in 1 player in the £7-12m bracket, without putting us in financial meltdown.

I'm not unrealistic mate. I don't expect us to spend £60m, and I imagine you chose that figure, in an attempt to undermine my argument

unfortunately not :(

well, according to a dutch league insider I know anyway:
de Guzman is a good attacking midfielder, but I don't see him making much of an impact the first year at Arsenal. He is most certainly not the Dutch Hargreaves, I dunno who came up that nonsense. de Guzman is a lesser version of Afellay. I think Arsenal could and should do better on the transfermarkt than buying de Guzman.

That is two out of three problems solved - two very good players who are young enough bought for 20 mil.
I don’t know much about de Guzman to be honest but £8m for Akinfeev who’s Russia’s number one and plays for a club (CSKA) who are pretty flush with cash and don’t need to sell, might be a bit of an underestimation, especially if de Guzman (less proven) would cost 50% more than him at those prices.

Even still you’re then left with £12m to cover both player’s wages. If we paid Akinfeev £40k a week for five years (and he’s probably on more than that in Russia) that would already come to £10.4m of that £12m, leaving £1.6m to pay de Guzman. £1.6m over five years equates to around £6k per week!

I know I’m probably doing this point to death but this is the point I’m trying to get across. Fiszman’s £30m sounds a lot but when you factor in the wages that also come from that £30m it’s really not that much at all.

As G88ner says Wenger should still be able to bring in one player of around £10-12m in with what he probably got. But Fiszman's quote is clearly designed to imply he has more than that.

Actually it would be worse than I thought. £12m for de Guzman and £8m for Akinfeev would leave us with £10m (not £12m  ) to cover wages so even £40k a week for Akinfeev and £zipzero for de Guzman would take us over budget.

That is two out of three problems solved - two very good players who are young enough bought for 20 mil. Last year, VDS was poor but United still won the title. Ergo, we can win the league with a dodgy cb partnership. Theo/Rosicky seem good enough to beat Eboue for a place in the team.
Wenger won't replace Almunia. If he does it will be with Fabainski.
Again, buying a replacement will push Fabainski down the pecking order.

Wenger is building a team for the future as well as the now.
However, buying a player now could effect the delevopment of a future 'star'.
Please Remember! It was Wengers decision to sale Vieira and many weren't happy. (me included!) It was more worrying that Vieira wasn't replaced.
Instead he promoted a young Spainish 17 year old!
Had Wenger replaced Vieira, Cesc may not have been the same player we have now but a poorer version. Also Cesc may not have wanted to wait around.

Wenger will by buy only if it addresses the balance of the team and doesn't effect up coming younger players.
Buying new players would effect the youngters in Wengers ultamate goal.

If Wengers replaces Flamini that would undermine and undo all the work put into Denilson, Diaby, Song.

We need one more in Midfield and I would hope to re-address the balance of the squad that the player would be experienced.
It's Wengers call!
Undermine them? why? since January, Denilson has gone from being behind Gilberto, Flamini and Diarra, to being an automatic first teamer! that's one hell of a rise, don't you think?

Has he earnt that? last season he disappeared from sight, due to poor form, and then being left in the reserves. This season he was the stand out worst performer against Fulham. He offered no protection to our defence...he offered no bite in midfield...and even his passing was woeful. Christ, have our standards dropped so low since we had Vieira enforcing our midfield, that we content ourselves with Denilson becuase we don't want to undermine Wenger's youth experiment?

Enough young players have come through at Arsenal, and signing one midfielder isn't going to undermine the whole system.. these young players need help! we are crying out for some bite in midfield, and from what I've seen, neither Diaby or Denilson can offer us that.

And Song? last season, Wenger said that he felt Song would grow into a fine central defender...and that was always the postion he thought suited him, yet now, because we're stretched to breaking point, he's now saying that Song is a midfielder.

I stand by my original comment..we need a midfielder who can offer bite and protection to our defence, and therefore allow Cesc to do what he does best.

G88ner I couldn't agreed with you more.
The fact is we're not in charge Wenger is.

I'm pretty confident (and hopeful) that Wenger will make another signing and he will be a defencive midfielder.
Quite frankly I don't think Denilson will make the 'Arsenal' grade.

However, you have to put yourself in Wengers shoes. If Wenger does buy a midfield to play along side Cesc that would put Denilson down the list.
That's fine in my book but is it in Wengers :?: Probably not!

I would like to think that Diaby is No. 1 along side Cesc but the problem is his injuries. I like to see him given a good go as he's never played in the centre.
A new addition would be either would go straight in or be behind Diaby in the CD mid pecking order pushing Denilson down to 3rd!

To start to critise and practically oust him is a bit harsh. I agree he has been poor but his only 19 FFS! He need the games as does Theo and has done Cesc!
Again I honestly don't think he'll make the grade but obviously. "Wenger Knows." (i hope :? )

I think we're pretty much in agreement mate, just coming from slightly different angles

I like Denilson, and I think he should be first back up to Cesc and *new signing* this season. He is only young, and I don't like criticising young players, as 20 is still very young, and early in his football development..but Wenger has made him a 1st teamer, and so, he needs to be looked upon as such... after all, we are supposedly fighting for the title!

I think our current squad is good enough for top 4, but not to win the title. I hope I'm wrong, but I think our centre backs will make too many mistakes, and unless we sign a midfield enforcer, I think we'll get overrun in midfield like we did at Fulham.

Look, whatever happens, I'm sure it'll be a rollercoaster of a season, and I'm certianly looking forward to it 8)

Here's to 3 points on Saturday!...but it's the away games that worry me :?

Nope I would agree with that 100%

The point I'm making is that Wenger may not see it the way we do! :banghead:
He may rather stick to his princibles and keep faith with Denilson as a first teamer.

However, Wengers proved me wrong on many occasions.
Which isn't a bad thing! :barscarf:

Trust me no attempt to undermine your argument. The point I was trying to make was that spending big may not be the answer. So even if we spend as much as £60M and dont win can we blame AW then?

For me, it's not all about winning the league. Wenger can only look after Arsenal, and put us in the best possible position to win the title. Obviously ManUre and Chelsea are great teams, with large transfer budgets, and if we lose out to them, then no...there is no shame.

But, if money is available - and all indication's suggest it is - then I think we need to use it. Our squad is not perfect....Gallas/Toure have proved to be a poor pairing, and as I've said in this thread, we are, in my opinion, short of a combative midfielder to protect our defence.

The we have Eboue. Last seaosn he made 20 odd appearances, and this season has been involved in every game so far...surely there are better players out there at a reasonable price?

For what it's worth, I still think we will sign a midfielder before the deadline, and that will put us in a much better position to fight for silverware.

One more thing....

I don't like the word blame. Wenger has transformed Arsenal football club, and for that I am eternally grateful, and I hope he's here for years to come, however....

what I was trying to say, is that many fans (including myself) have given Wenger plenty of leeway - and have accepted the lack of silverware - as I understand that the building of the Grove, and the inevitable loan repayments, are a heavy burden on the club, and on Wenger's transfer budget.

But, at the same time, if the board have made funds available, then I expect it to be used, as our squad can surely be improved upon? therefore, if he chooses not to spend, because he thinks our squad is in fact strong enough, then he should be held accountable if we fail to mount a serious title challenge, or get seriously close to winning a trophy...after all, that is his job; to win trophies!

By the way, when I say accountable, I don't mean sacked.
