If he wasn't going to buy anyone, why the fuck didn't he keep Gilberto then? I know he looked dodgy last season when he played, but his experience was invaluble and playing pre season, he would have hit the ground running in the League

Out of all our departures, thats looking the worst, especially as Flamini had already gone.

CM? why?

If you're wondering why I didn't mention him....what would be the point? the whole debate is who would play alongside him.

As the holding midfielder? you think?
Anderson, Eboue, Lucas and Gerrard?
Tinpot....ok, mate...explain. How would Nasri and Cesc be a good partnership in CM? I can't see how it would be effective defensively?

And why are you questioning why I think Gerrard is capable of playing CM?? he can tackle...and he's played there many times for Liverpool and England.

Anderson also plays there for United.

Lucas is a CM, and apparently is an all rounder (like Denilson)

Eboue played there against FC Twente and Fulham.
In your first post you said "Holding midfielders"

imo

Gerrard, Lucas, Anderson and Eboue are not holding midfielders

But they can do it...and have done.

Nasri was your suggestion...and I doubt he can play alongside Cesc in CM.

ManUre often play Anderson/Scholes..with Anderson playing deeper than Scholes.

Ebgland have played with Gerrard and Lampard...with Gerrard playing deeper.

My point is, I think Anderson or Gerrard could partner Cesc better than Denilson, Song, Diaby or Eboue.

I didn't say Nasri is a dm, i was just trying to prove your point wrong. As for your points, i still think none of them are dm.

Sorry tinpot...it's my fault for not being clear. Sorry mate.

My point was...

Denilson and Cesc, in my opinion, don't offer the defence the same prootection as the options at Cheslea, ManUre and Liverpool.

Time will tell, I suppose

I'm not surprised we haven't signed anyone, when Wenger casually remarked he thought the deadline was 12 noon I got the distinct feeling he wasn't looking at adding to the squad. I have long suspected that he lost the club chequebook and is too embarrassed to admit it to the board. Look down the back of the sofa Arsene.

But I'm not as disappointed as many others seem to be, Spurs, City and Liverpool are spending like it's going outa fashion and while I don't think we'll win the league I expect to finish above all those clubs. Realistically Gareth Barry, the player I've wanted to see come to the club for a long time was ridiculously overpriced. While for me our squad remains too shallow to compete on all fronts we will have a few options in the much fretted over position of central midfielder. Within the squad we have Cesc, Denilson, Song, Ramsey, Diaby who can play there, they may prove to be as effective as a big name signing, I would like to see Song given an opportunity in the holding role, I think he's well suited to it.

The only thing which is saving me from despair is, believe it or not, last season. I thought we'd plummet down the table when we failed to add some big signings to the squad. I would never have believed Adebayor would have scored as many as he did, that the previously unknown Eduardo would prove to be a major find, that Flamini and Hleb would both up their contribution considerably and that the whole squad generally would improve across the board. We really should have won that title, and but for a very bad day at Birmingham we might have.

So far this season we have looked mediocre against WBA, awful against Fulham and awesome against Newcastle, lets hope the latter is the real Arsenal. Arsenal were better than I expected last year, but ultimately not strong enough in depth to win the league, it seems to go against all footballing logic to think they can improve given who has left and who has been signed, but doesn't Nasri already look a more potent goal threat than the balletic Hleb?

I expect new stars to be born in the cauldron of the Emirates this season and I still believe in Arsene Wenger.
