Sorry Mods & Gooners - Off Topic I know, but what with all the transfer madness, I wanted as many people to see this as possible:

Tomorrow, MPs start debating the gagging law. [1] The government wants to rush it through parliament. [2] Our best hope of stopping them is to make sure MPs realise just what a dodgy law they are being asked to vote for. Please can you email your MP now and help build the pressure?

If passed, the gagging law would have a chilling effect on our democracy. From May 2014, draconian new rules would prevent non-politicians from speaking up on the big issues of the day. A huge range of campaign groups and charities – everyone from The Royal British Legion, to Oxfam, to the RSPB - are warning about the threat this poses. [3]

It’s telling that so many groups who wouldn't normally agree with each other have united to oppose the gagging law. Groups that speak out in favour of hunting, windfarms, HS2 or building more houses are joining together with groups who say exactly the opposite. [4]

That’s because there’s one thing we should all be able to agree on: in a healthy democracy, everyone should able to express their views. And everyone should be allowed to get organised to highlight what politicians are saying and doing on the issues that matter to them.

Politics is too important to leave to political parties. When we speak up about decisions that affect us and the future of our country, we can often change things for the better. Are politicians really so arrogant as to think the UK would be better off if all these groups were blocked from campaigning?

Let’s come together quickly and tell MPs that this gagging law must not be passed. The first vote is on Tuesday, so please email your MP now:

Been reading a biography on Gary Speed by a Welsh football journalist. Didn't really know what to expect but was quite a good read actually. His Leeds days were a bit before my time so it was interesting to read about that and his dedication to sports science from an early age. The author also clearly had some very candid chats with people close to Speed (and many with Speed himself during his playing and managerial career) so there were some very interesting insights into some private and behind the scenes discussions.

If you didn't follow football you'd be forgiven for thinking Gary Speed was one of the all-time greats of the game after reading it but that's to be expected I guess, and was certainly far less annoying than reading about farce after farce at the FAW.

Still feel unfulfilled though having read the book and having absolutely no idea what drove him to do such a thing.

I had a text from a relative who works for a well known book publishing house and He (God) is being asked to do a tour to promote the book and some of the dates being mooted include 2 (maybe) 3 Book Signings in London - One at the Bowl the other a 'renowned book store'...

I was in "The Works" bookshop at lunchtime,and picked up a copy of Gary Nevilles ,autobiography,"Red", for £2.99,(reduced from £13.99).
I thought it good for two reasons:-
1, That given his performances on Sky Sport are enjoyable,I thought that his book may be a good read, and
2, It was good to see a Man Utd players book in a "Remainders" bookshop!!!

I finally read it from cover to cover on the journey to and from Bali.
It made me laugh out loud several times, on the plane, especially the 'bastard' taxi driver stunt.
I would recommend it to anyone of a certain genre.
It was easy to imagine SLF and Thin Lizzy being the sounds of choice and for myself I would have also chosen Squeeze for the playlist.
Really pleased that I made the effort to read again, as I am a lazy git. I shall never listen to recorded books of Harry Potter or Doris Stokes again.

I gave it away at Perth airport to another Gooner.

Cheers, mate. I'm delighted you enjoyed it. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Had mostly positive feedback from people that bought it. Have made a few quid off it but no where near enough to take up writing full time.

The taxi driver stunt is an old Dublin urban myth - everyone "knows someone" that knows someone that did it.

Just read "Does your Rabbi Know You're Here?" by Anthony Clavane.

It is a history of Jews in English football.
Might seem an obscure subject but it is superbly written.

Features a lot about Arsenal and the rivalry with Spurs, not always what one might expect.
In the 1930's the Spurs board flew a Swastika flag above White Hart Lane, whilst on the contrary Herbert Chapman participated in Jewish charities and the Arsenal board would use the match day programme to wish Jewish fans a Happy New Year on Rosh Hashona, though it does point out a crude remark by Dennis Hill-Wood.

Fascinating read for me, and I think too for most people into football, because it contains a potted social history of English football as well as insight into how the game has developed on the field, plus some great anecdotes.
