which striker (left back and backup goalie) should we buy?

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Purely coz of the back ups we have Chezza is undroppable.

If we got in a proper DM - Arteta for me would be droppable.

If somebody better is suddenly available
then course Pele, Messi, Crujff and Maradonna are theoretically droppable
I was going with our actual real squad, not a hypothetical

Which one and where are people's preferences? I'm disappointed it hasn't been tried tbh.
Arteta may have had a form blip but, for me, he's undroppable.
Our real capatain.

I interpreted this to mean that even if we signed a DM Arteta would remain undroppable. My bad

much, understandable, cynicism on here about us making a big signing
I think it might well happen, I think the board want/need one for PR purposes
just like the Glazers made a statement with RVP (a player ManUre didnt necessarily need)

my issue is Wenger's big money signings (I can think of 4 in the £15M bracket) have been far from unqualified successes:
Arshavin - got us in the CL, then flopped
Reyes - also started, well but never settled
Wiltord - the biggest win but ultimately was an impact sub and a rotation option rather than a superstar
Na$ri - started slow, half a good season. Bottled it, then betrayed the manager. Profit but no trophies.

historically Wenger is as likely to promote a young player as he is to buy a superstar
but Joel Campbell, Ryo Miyachi and Benik Afobe are hardly getting any starts let alone goals
our new commercial deals come up soon, as does Wengers contract renewal
I think we will buy our first £20M player this winter

my opinion is still the same:
not making serious additions to the squad would be a catastrophic (terminal?) managerial gamble
unless squad members deliver in ways I never thought they could (which I guess to some extent Rambo and Feo have started to do) I worry we're short of the quality required for top 4 this season
(side note: counterbalance is Verm and Sagna delivering shite in a way I never thought they would)

the rationale behind me predicting we would make a 'marquee' type big name signing
was the 2014 renegotiation of sponsorship deals + imminent huge jump in Sky money
our shirt sponsors were actually all announced well in advance, which I didn't expect
I guess that should have been the clue I was totally wrong about our strategy

I thought a big name signing, and a bump in results and international profile, could be justified by better sponsorship deals
was securing them early an indicator our negotiation team didn't expect our situation to improve in the short term?

to me, with new deals to be negotiated and a massive income bounce guaranteed, making a transfer market splash was logical

seems our board and manager disagree (I would see David Villa as a 'marquee signing' even though he would be sub£20M)

replying to this as flash is 'bumping' my original offbase prediction.
I'm still going to try and stick to historical/away day threads.
I'm not capable of dealing with (what I see as) irrational hatred, in a rational manner.
So best I stick to the good old days, and away boozer recommendations.

Nobody......save all the money......the answer is not always to spend.......I don't want us to become the next Portsmouth.......keep the faith.......have confidence in this squad.......stop moaning all the time and sing from the rooftops

ONE ARSENE WENGER......THERE'S ONLY ONE ARSENE WENGER

Everybody is talking about a marquee signing.......at the moment I think people would settle for a tent signing and come 10.55pm we'll be down to a wendy house
