The Summer 2014 TRANSFER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Even if wenger went out and bought ALL the players we are hoping he will, there would still be Gooners who would not be satisfied.

Put Two Gooners in a room and they will come out with three opinions.

It could be worse we could be liverpool - Victims of the world.

Ever the optimist, I hope AW will break with tradition and get another top player in.

Alexis' signing seems to have created more of a buzz than other PL signing so far and there are lots of positive vibes both within the Arsenal family and in the media. There's never been a better time to try and persuade another top player (or two) to join us.

Martínez and Cavani would do nicely, but Khedira / Bender / Schneiderlin and a top CF would still have me dreaming of a title challenge.

Actually the only reason I put it in this thread was to plead for perspective from so Gooners who are orgasmic at the prospect of ozil and sanchez linking up - was trying to say that any further purchases we do should be system based and not profile based (hence this post's inclusion in the transfer thread 8) )

Don't know too much about Martinez, but thought Cavani was poor in the World Cup...he has a 'rep' but from what i saw wasn't what we need.
I agree that the best signing for the team right now would be the likes of Khedira or Bender Mid-field - pity there's no young Gattuso's out there! :?

Our targets or wenker/clubs targets ? I mean my targets include martinez whilst the papers have us linked with khedira and bender, but maybe none of these are the targets that le cock and the club are chasing so they might end up getting the player that they have coveted all along but the rest of us would be left underwhelmed. Has there ever been a summer where le cock has made two massive purchases ? Maybe there has but it's sunday morning and I cant think of one, which leads me to suspect that the chances of us making another star signing are slim
Personally, I think Khedira and Bender are very good players who are an upgrade on our DM's already. Not saying they're the worlds best but certainly an upgrade. Would signing any of those two underwhelm you? They're big name players who are respected in their position - as is Martinez but I don't see that happening.

All the rumours could be a blind to come back with Christoph Kramer who will cost a lot less and won't be raiding the bank of England every week either.

Can't see us signing Khedira myself. He's 27 and I think that Higuain being 27 was a large part of the reason Wenger wouldn't spend the money on him. Ozil was 24 and Sanchez is 25 so it's a bit easier for Wenger to justify to himself spending those sorts of sums rather than on a 27-year old who has just missed most of a season through injury and has now had a gruelling WC rather than a summer of rehabilitation.

EDIT: Just noticed Higuain was 25 too    All the more shame that we didn't sign him but point remains re Khedira.
