I must admit, the news that Napoli might get Higuain is deeply worrying, as Rooney and Suarez are surely pie in the sky? :?

But we must bring in a top class striker, surely? - then again, I read a blog the other day that was arguing that the form of Giroud and Akpom in pre-season was enough to suggest it may be worth saving our one.

I wanted to throttle the author for being so stupid
I just think he belongs to a bygone age. Its similar to the bitter end of GG's regime. Whilst I loved Graham to bits the last 2-3 years of watching his teams was mostly desperate. The whole world knew that we needed a top class midfielder and we were linked with many including Keane, but we kept making do with plodders like Jensen, Morrow, Hillier and Selley, and the one half decent one we had in Schwarz fucked off.

GG's early success was signing players like Dixon, Winterburn and Bould for fuck all and moulding them into a much better sum of the parts. That was fine in the pre-Premier League days because clubs didn't generally spend big money on overseas talent, not even the Mickeys or the Mancs who were always bigger clubs historically. So in the pre-1992 days his plan worked. When the Sky money came in, GG wouldn't budge in his approach and we became a mid-table cup side playing mostly desperate football.

Wenger's early success came when he had a free run at French talent and before foreign owners came into the game. The method worked - you could buy Anelka for £500k and Petit for £3m - but now everyone has a global scouting network and Chelsea, United and everyone else has top world stars from an early age. In this day and age a top class striker costs more than £20m, but he seems unable to live in that world and finds the 'new money' approach immoral. Fine to have principles but the days of nicking Anelka from under everyone's noses are gone. I think he still believes he'll sign a Joel Campbell for peanuts and turn him into a Ballon d'Or winner. In some ways its an honourable effort but one that I think started to die a death the minute Abramovich bought Chelsea. United embraced the challenge and we stood there bleating to UEFA about how terrible it all was. Wenger would feel a failure if he had to spend £30m on a player - I really do believe that
Brilliant post SteveO and those are sentiments that I wholeheartedly agree with........ Sad but very true. :|

Yeah I second that, spot on. Wenger's approach changed the game here in 1997 but was outdated a decade later - now it's basically flogging a dead horse. Wenger will always be stuck in 2002-04 and we as a club are delighted to tread water whilst other clubs (those with sugar daddies and those who have phenomenal resources otherwise like United, Barca and Madrid) are moving on - more ruthless with their signings and their players/staff. The gap's getting wider and I wouldn't even say we're hanging onto the coat-tails of the top teams.

we're not even in the race to sign suarez or rooney, we cant compete with real madrid and chelsea, or more to the point, we WONT compete.

so once higuain joins napoli, real madrid will choose suraez or rooney and chelsea will get whoevers left.

what options will that leave us then? saldado? torres?

Personally I wouldn't have a problem with us signing Torres, I believe we could get him back to his best.......
The only problem we have is Moaninho, I can't see him wanting to help us out.

Wouldn't buy Torres but maybe a one year loan with an option at £15M

Mourinho wouldn't sell us Torres - and certainly not at anything like his current value. Inevitably we'll go knocking round in mid-to-late August expecting clubs to be willing to part with their prized players for very modest fees - and when that doesn't work we'll turn to the bargain basement. My money's on Papiss Cisse.

Torres :( why would a cash rich, ambitious club leave themselves in the position of having him as the final aption :?

Unless Wenger is their manager

Ancelotti denies a fee has been agreed for Higuain

This story has more fictional twists and turns than Lost!

I really can't wait for this transfer window to close. It's put the media in such a bad light, it's ridiculous. Any credibility they had has gone out the window. They're clueless, and use lies to try and hide it.

Sounds like the Higuain transfer will be a bidding war, if they let him go, which should come as no surprose really.

He (Ancelotti) said of Higuaín, who has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal and also Italian side Napoli: "Not true, I don't have any news about this.

"I think that now we have to speak about Higuaín as a Real Madrid player. He is a fantastic player and a fantastic striker who took one minute to score tonight.

"I spoke to him this week. He is a Real Madrid player and until we have news we have to consider him as a Real Madrid player and I would like him to stay with us. He is very important to us and nothing else - it is not my business to judge the price of a player."

Wanger doesn't want to make signings until the last day of the window because he STILL believes he can get a better deal and he is primarily interested in money, NOT success on the pitch.
There will be no bids for world class players, not even a 15-20m player coming in. We will make a last ditch panic buy bid for Loic Remy for about 6m and sign some French/African midfielder and that will be it.
Wanger does not sign top quality players unless it's a complete bargain, like when he stiffed Malaga for Cazorla as they were desperate. There are so many clubs with money now he will have to spend to buy quality, it will not happen!!!
