Just one note of defence for our beleaguered police force which has come in for some severe criticism.

My friend is a police constable in Southall nick and he was told that he had to fill in three pieces of paper before he was allowed to man the streets last night...he said that paperwork has killed the response of police to many areas. The riot squad had to fill in disclaimers stating that should they be injured their insurance policy will not guarantee full payment!!!!

I would not want to be a police officer for all the tea in china.

WTF, why would they not get paid for being hurt?

Premiums high and no guarantee of safety, in a nutshell, our police are damned whichever way u look at it.

There is a whole culture of youth running parallel to mainstream culture, and it is a violent one. Of establishing your status in the pack by intimidation.

I do agree that this is part of the problem but I think it's also narrow minded to suggest this is the root cause.

Sure kids want these material posessions. I did when I was growing up in the 90s. Doesn't mean I went around robbing places. I worked hard, and now I have my material posessions - paid for our of my own wages.

In addition, I think the Looting is more opportunistic theft. The real crimes here are people who are having their homes or businesses smashed in and torched.

Youngsters are completely lawless, there is no discipline whatsoever from either parents or teachers. The only role models they have are other youths on the streets who are a bad influence, but ultimately they rub off on the younger kids and we get to this stage.

Youngsters these days fear nobody. The legal system has let us down time and again with tiny sentences for serious crimes. The government have let us down by making cuts to the police force, and making them complete reams of paperwork to avoid the whole "human rights" issue and to make sure everything is done exactly by the book.

This whole society is rotten from top to bottom and I fear that as it goes on, people will turn more and more towards a radical solution.
