THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

It was always gonna be just a matter of time before one of the players came out admitting the way things were being run -

It just re-iteratesthe way the old has been operated, no gameplay, no specific tactics to nullify opponents, just “go out and play” while I hug myself and keep my fingers crossed there are no special circumstances

Busted flush...has been for many years. No big club would ever come in for him and even if they did I think he would create an excuse to turn it down. Whatever he is, he is not stupid, I see him as a cunning, manipulating, intolerant megalomaniac, and he knows that just one year at a top club will lay waste to his ludicrously over hyped reputation.
I agree with this with the exception of the last bit. I think that when he was at Arsenal, he was doing anything to cling to his job, but now that he is gone, it does appear that some self-reflection has been done. I think that he was quoted as saying that he stayed too long. I do think that outside of international management (and even that is a long shot), I don't see him managing again. I hope that he does get into the UEFA in some sort of decision making position. He certainly would be an upgrade on the current regime.
Tbh mate I don't think his "I stayed too long" comment was him being self aware. I think it was him having a dig at us Gooners - as in, he sacrificed too much of his career for us ungrateful bastards by staying when every big club in the world wanted him as lifelong manager and owner and dictator and and CEO and director of football and kitman and so on and so fourth... :D

Slight correction.

Huh? Are you being sarcastic mate? If anything Wenger comes out looking well there for being loyal to a top quality player for once, rather than his usual stupid misplaced loyalty to shit like Song Denilson Almunia Chesney Bendtner Vela Gibbs Xhaka Welwide etc etc etc etc....

The thing here is that it was Santi who got the benefit and that is alright with me - had it been Xhaka I would not be at all happy which is hypocrtical of me I know but then again in my defence I think Xhaka is a cu.nt

I get the whole loyalty to a nice guy thing, but the flip side of that is we as a club gave a millionaire an extra years wages for nothing, whilst refusing to pay the club staff the london wage

Was just about to post that link. It's a good read and what Santi went through was horrific. I agree 100% re Santi getting the benefit and Xhaka being a cúnt! :D

I also agree with that tbh. But then if we have to pay someone something they have not earned then at least in Santi's case where he was a top player for a few years with us and he is a nice guy. The number of dislikeable and shit players we have overpaid in the last 10 years is terrible. :|

Cazorla should not have been given another contract.End of.None of this what a nice guy he was.The same goes for giving Rosicky a contract when he never played a game that season. Are we a fucking charity?

No, we are not a charity and in the cold hard light of day neither should have got the extensions that they did. BUT I'm sure if we go back over some of the complete dross that TOF purchased over the years we could find sufficient evidence to indicate that we were something akin to a charity at times. I simply find Santi and Rosicky getting a few extra quid after the service they gave the club more palatable than giving a penny to certain players who should never have been anywhere near an Arsenal shirt.

Agreed 100%. Ffs lads we don't have to be angry about everything. I'd swear there are people on here that hated winning those last 3 FA Cups because Wenger was the manager.

Maybe it had to do with him getting the medical treatment he required and subsequent operation ? Perhaps if he was out of contract he would have to fund it himself rather than claimed through the clubs insurance ?

It appears foolhardy giving a guy a years wage for free, but no worse than keeping Mertesacker or Arteta for another year.
I don’t begrudge Santi being looked after, his cup final free kick saved Wenkers bacon for another 3 years after all :barscarf:

The Cazorla contract is one of the worst things he did in my opinion, based on what I’ve seen.

Not one of the most damaging by a long chalk, but sums up the culture at the club which was about buying loyalty and some socialist utopia above the interests of success.

He gave Cazorla a contract despite him having been out for a while and his long-term prognosis being at best piss-poor and at worst (and in reality) completely unknown. If he had waited a few months to see how he recovered, who would have come in and swooped Cazorla from under our noses? Nobody. Not a chance. If he had shown decent progression over the next few months we could have offered him a deal then and he would absolutely have taken it.

He did it to look after a favourite of his and not for the good of arsenal football club. And that’s absolutely unforgivable, no matter how much you might like Cazorla.

Santi always looked like he gave a fuck, played with a smile, tackled hard, classy on both feet I loved him. He got injured with Arsenal, I have no problem with our club giving him a year extension out of good will.

We have spent more on worse.
