SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not sign

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I know it's slightly in jest, but I do find it a little sad, irritating and totally unfair how people keep referring to Ibrahimovic when having a dig at Wenger.

Ok, we missed out on him in 2001 but in 1996 we signed Vieira; in 1997 we signed Overmars, Anelka and Petit; in 1998 we signed Ljungberg; in 1999 we signed Henry (our greatest ever goalscorer) and in 2000 we signed Pires (another of our greatest ever players); in 2001 we signed Sol Campbell; in 2002 we signed Gilberto Silva; in 2003 we signed Fabregas, and in 2004 we signed Van Persie.

Yet again and again, people choose to highlight Ibrahimovic? - I don't think it's fair at all.

Wenger's failings are beyond 2005. Before that, his record of trophies and bringing quality players to the club was fantastic!

(oh, by the way - not a dig at you mate, just got me thinking  )

You're right, It was tongue in cheek, but it's still pertinent. Bar Ibra, who climbed out of the pram because we offered him a trial only, and Ronaldo who obviously would've chosen the mancs over us, I think the point is still salient.

I just wish Wenker would keep his counsel and not continually remind us who we nearly signed.

I used to like that when we were successful, but I suppose once you start losing matches and embark on a 8 year (and counting) trophyless streak, you have to behave differently as you're viewed in an entirely different way.

G88ner,

it's maddening though because we weren't far away from Wenker's project being vindicated, '08 title failure for example, but he just seems to be so stuck in his ways and intransigent.

I don't think we would've seen the exodus we have if we'd have just shown some ambition/foresight and carefully improved the squad instead of relying on Denilson, Diaby et al to fulfil their potential.

The comments about Alonso still piss me off, he would've been a fantastic signing but of course, it would've "killed" our existing players. Higuain was holding out for us and didn't want to go to Napoli but, for whatever reason, we missed out.

Ho hum.

Well Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic would have arrived as youngsters so turned out to be complete shit under Wenker's leadership anyway, and if not they'd have been sold. So it doesn't bother me really :?

That's a good point about Ibrahimovic.

So what if we missed out on him in 2001. Look how many clubs he's played for - he wouldn't have stayed at Arsenal long after our CL final appearance, I reckon.

Where are they getting the money for these transfers if Bale's not going with no CL windfall? Will be in excess of £40m and they've recouped feck all with no realistic prospect of recouping anything meaningful from anybody else.

Plus you can bet that their wage bill will have gone up considerably from their last published figures - since when they've given new contracts out to Bale (amongst others) and signed Greedybayor and Dempsey - both likely to be on fairly substantial wages.

I guess they've actually made considerable profit on transfers over the last 24 months. Either way if this happens you can bet that it'll spread unrest even more amongst our fans to see Spurs splashing the cash.

Not signing the required players isnt just about wenger and the clubs refusal to spend the going rate cos there is a perception out in the wider football world that we are now a selling club :( As wenker himself admitted just 2 summers ago, no club can expect to keep selling there best players and be considered a big club and we have been doing that for years. The size and stature of our club could easily withstand the departures of players like the french lesbo and greedybayor but once you start losing key players like cesc and rvp it will always have a serious impact on the image of a club.

There are many of us that dont believe that the c.unt in charge will ever spend huge money on a single player but if we are wrong then what would be the motives behind it ? If I was a top player with ambitions I dont know if I would sign for Arsenal as things stand cos I would be asking myself if the club are signing me just to look like a big club again or if I was going to be the start of a real positive revolution at the club. We have more than 1 hole to fill in the team and squad so why are we not upgrading those positions whilst working away on a suarez type deal in the background ? Is it because signing suarez is mainly being attempted for image reasons or is it cos wenker doesnt see the other problem area's within the team ? We desperately need a proven keeper to challenge chesney so why no move for cesar ? Whether you believe that he is no longer good enough to be our number 1 (I dont agree with that btw), dont we still need an experienced player to keep the pressure on chesney and step in when he is unavailable ? If our transfer budget wont stretch to signing fellaini and suarez then why not buy a wanyama to fill that key defensive midfield spot ? For me this has all the hallmarks of an attempt to sign a star player to appease the fans rather than the start of a change of policy and ambitions that many fans will think it is

Btw I still dont believe that we will sign suarez

Suarez is a smoke screen for Arsene. He knows the Mousers won't let him go for less than £50m - £60m, just as he knows the board will not allow him to spend that on one player. This Suarez thing is all so Arsene can say "But we tried to sign Suarez - we were maybe 1% or 2% away from signing him but the Mousers wanted silly money" when angry fans/shareholders etc have a pop at his project/transfer business next season because we are out of all the cups in January and scrapping for 4th AGAIN by Februarzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Was thinking the same, imagine the terror in the voice if Ivan rang Arsene saying "Liverpool HAVE accepted our offer for Suarez, what the fuck do we do now ?"
