awesome night. best atmosphere in the grove since the first 10 mins of the 2009 CL semi. quality performance and so proud that the lads stood up and played the game they talked up before K/O. Didnt get back to Leeds and bed till 02:30 and am proper fucked in work now wondering why I put my name down for 5-aside tonight, but boy was it worth it.

This is the Arsenal team we all know we have and I hope this means we have seen the last of the Newcastle arsenal team if you get what I mean.

ahhh just savour the moment. :barscarf:

Fuck you Graeme Bailey
Barcelona by Graeme Bailey (@GraemeBailey)
Indeed, Wilshere is a hugely talented player and he is very much looking like he could be the best English player of his generation.

But let us not get carried away, Wilshere's display against Barcelona on Wednesday was OK, pretty good, but nothing more than that - maybe pushing a rating of 7.5 out of 10.

Suddenly, thanks to a hugely fortunate win which arguably stemmed from a tactical error (Pep Guardiola's decision to replace David Villa), Wilshere is being propelled to heights beyond his current development.

At 19, Wilshere is a shining light in English football, but let us not forget the current malaise within our game.

The fact this morning that people feel Wilshere is already on par with the likes of Xavi does beggar belief.

Yes, stats can often produce a false picture. But let us take a quick look at what our friends at Opta saw last night, for instance, on Wilshere. If he was indeed Man of the Match, as many have told me, how many forward passes would you expect? 19? No? Well that is just what he produced, 19 forward passes in 90 minutes.

A quick look at Xavi sees he made 71, whilst Iniesta produced 53 and even the holding man Busquets made 40 - and this is forward passes, not just sideways balls as has been contested by many.

This is no condemnation of Wilshere in any way, merely the hype surrounding him, which I am sure neither he or Arsenal are courting.

Barcelona, through their wonderfully engineered midfield, dominated for more than an hour and should have put the game beyond Arsenal before their excellent late rally.

To get the best out of Wilshere he needs to be nurtured, you need only look to Xavi and Iniesta, both of whom were not rushed and already had a season of first-team football under their belts before being considered for Spain.

Granted, having an English side managed by a dead man walking in Fabio Capello will not help Wilshere, but we are fortunate that he is under the tutelage of Wenger.

im with you dawg

some stats are good at looking at a big picture if they take in a long period of time (say, the course of a season) but judging wilshere on passing stats compared to xavi and iniesta is borderline retarded. For starters our game plan was different to barcelona's - they were trying to control the game, we were trying to hit them with precise and quick attacking moves.

Fact is, pretty much everything good we put together went through Wilshere who not only showed quality but the calmness with which he wriggled his way out of danger on numerous occaisions was a joy to watch. Usually im uncomfortable with young players getting such praise but if Jack can put in such a nerveless performance in a game like that then i have zero worries about his ability to cope with the psycological demands of playing at the top of the game.

top top top top player

You can actually smell the disapointment from some quarters of the media that we managed to turn over Barcelona.

Fucking prick. I don't know how anyone can call that a "lucky" win for us :? We shut them out defensively & put away more chances than they did. Lucky would be a Valdes mis-clearance rebounding off Eboue's arse & into the net via Bendtner's cock from an offside position.

Oh without a doubt mate. It started as soon as the final whistle went last night. Endless moronic journo hacks bleeting on about how we're gonna get turned over at Camp Nou. Fuck you. How about taking Redknapp's cock out your mouth & giving us just a little bit of praise for beating the best team in the world?

No one likes us, we don't care.

Henry Winter in the Daily Telegraph makes good reading on the game and second leg chances.

He points out that with Pique out, and with Nasri sharper, we have a good chance in the Nou Camp.

I was in that corner so must be in the scramble somewhere on that. Have to ask though, how can you think about filming during a game and a moment like that :?
