Indeed, Wilshere is a hugely talented player and he is very much looking like he could be the best English player of his generation.
But let us not get carried away, Wilshere's display against Barcelona on Wednesday was OK, pretty good, but nothing more than that - maybe pushing a rating of 7.5 out of 10.
Suddenly, thanks to a hugely fortunate win which arguably stemmed from a tactical error (Pep Guardiola's decision to replace David Villa), Wilshere is being propelled to heights beyond his current development.
At 19, Wilshere is a shining light in English football, but let us not forget the current malaise within our game.
The fact this morning that people feel Wilshere is already on par with the likes of Xavi does beggar belief.
Yes, stats can often produce a false picture. But let us take a quick look at what our friends at Opta saw last night, for instance, on Wilshere. If he was indeed Man of the Match, as many have told me, how many forward passes would you expect? 19? No? Well that is just what he produced, 19 forward passes in 90 minutes.
A quick look at Xavi sees he made 71, whilst Iniesta produced 53 and even the holding man Busquets made 40 - and this is forward passes, not just sideways balls as has been contested by many.
This is no condemnation of Wilshere in any way, merely the hype surrounding him, which I am sure neither he or Arsenal are courting.
Barcelona, through their wonderfully engineered midfield, dominated for more than an hour and should have put the game beyond Arsenal before their excellent late rally.
To get the best out of Wilshere he needs to be nurtured, you need only look to Xavi and Iniesta, both of whom were not rushed and already had a season of first-team football under their belts before being considered for Spain.
Granted, having an English side managed by a dead man walking in Fabio Capello will not help Wilshere, but we are fortunate that he is under the tutelage of Wenger.
stats... grrrrrrrr....Gooner AL wrote:Fuck you Graeme Bailey

Oh without a doubt mate. It started as soon as the final whistle went last night. Endless moronic journo hacks bleeting on about how we're gonna get turned over at Camp Nou. Fuck you. How about taking Redknapp's cock out your mouth & giving us just a little bit of praise for beating the best team in the world?JMascis666 wrote:You can actually smell the disapointment from some quarters of the media that we managed to turn over Barcelona.
I was in that corner so must be in the scramble somewhere on that. Have to ask though, how can you think about filming during a game and a moment like thatEboue-Why? wrote:Fucking brilliant clip! goosebumps all overkg1794 wrote:Good video here of AA goal from crowd:
