The quality just isn't there for England, simple as that really. Kept the ball better and more shape but sacrificed attacking fluidity to do so. England's pacey young attackers can cause problems when it comes together but if it doesn't click they've not got the predatory quality like Uruguay had in Cavani/Suarez to compensate. Jagielka has looked well out of his depth throughout both games, Gerrard has predictably been off the pace but still couldn't resist going for glory with a brainless pot-shot at the end, Baines was never going to be able to bomb forward and find spaces against ropey defences like he does for Everton and hasn't looked too composed defensively. When you're bringing mid-table players off the bench it sums it up really.

Uruguay hardly covered themselves in glory - they were okay although hardly impressive first half, but just sat back all second half and got away with constant niggly fouling. Can see why they struggled so much, although their keeper quite impressed me - took responsibility and looked a damn sight more assured than Hart at the other end. In theory England are still in this - if Italy win their other two games and England beat Costa Rica (possibly by two goals) they'll go through. Unlikely but I don't think England will be eliminated today.

I thought that whoever lost tonight were finished but looking at the league table now, it seems likely (to me anyway) that engerland will still go though on goal difference unless the Italians put out a total second string team

Felt sorry for the girlfriend beater (sterling) - after the Italy game the media had hyped him up above any realistic expectations and he was never going to be as dominant in this game.

Thought wilshere should have been first sub on tbh - I thought that he (jack) was poor the last game but Henderson was total dogshite tonight and should have been subbed at half time imo

The substitutions have been pretty thoughtless imo, even considering the dearth of decent options. Hodgson caved to the media clamour for Our Lord and Saviour Ross Barkley and another populist sub in Lallana even though bringing him on against Italy offered nothing. Along with taking Flampard and cramming as many Liverpool players into the side England may as well just be done with managers and let the media vote on major tournament selection from now on.
