As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The Whores do like a dive and a whine of course but to see Messi waving the imaginary card at the ref was sickening. As someone that has always said he is better than the diving ladyboy at Madrid partly because on top of being a better player he has has grit and character and doesn't dive or cheat, I was disgusted to see that. He went down in my estimation. If you are that good surely you can get through life without acting the cúnt?
Messi is and always was just as much a diving, cheating c unt as any of the "galacticos". The difference with messi is hes smarter and better at it. (Just like hes smarter and better at football than pretty much everyone else) When he goes down, he stays there, doesnt roll around or aknowlege anyone. He did a nice little triple salko on the edge of our box first half, then lay there stiff as a corpse. Gust of wind did it I think.
There was an inevitability about last night , maybe not in the extent that we were disciplined but in the outcome. If after eighty minutes it was still 0-0 I would have been sure that Barca would score . That is the reality of the naive squad lacking enough quality at this level that is Arsenal.
For what it is worth i thought Ramsey played well , a few horrible passes aside, I thought he was disciplined with little or no stupid flicks. The opposition concentrated his mind and he was better for it. Monreal was also good, unlucky with the card considering what went unpunished. Mert the BCG was well protected avoiding the nightmare we envisaged of him getting caught on the half way line as his three colleagues bombed forward. Kos read a few situations well . Bellerin has energy but in one second early in the second half he had a chance to free Ozil , he hesitated and was caught. Thought overall our speed of thought in the final third was lacking. The quality of passing in this area was also a problem. The rare chances we had to stretch them were lost by poor passing or getting caught in possession. Giroud is not a striker with the quality for this level, mid table Premier league at best. For the first goal on the break he didn't contest the cross allowing the defender a free header to launch the attack. I accept that there are times he does work and track back etc but that aint winning us games at the top level.
Ox was another exposed, missed a great chance then on the three man break he moved the ball , maybe not on purpose, towards the defender instead of using the space in front of him. These are the little things. If Ox was started because of his work rate and willingness to track back then Campbell has a right to feel disappointed. Campbell gives that and more despite being no world beater himself. Theo we are still waiting. Game changer to an extent against Leicester but hopelessly out of his depth last night.
The coup de grace was the final substitution. If one word sums up Flamini for me it is WHY ?..Why bring him on? Why have him on the bench ? Why pay him? Why is he at the club ?
The apologists and AKB s will happily point out Barca are the best in the world and no Premier League team could touch them and maybe that is true but only because Arsenal PLC have allowed it to be true. Forget the Chelseas and Citys etc, this is about Arsenal and if anyone questions why we should be competing with Barca etc point them in the direction of Highbury and tell them leaving there for 22,000 extra seats is the reason because that was the promise.

I don't get the hate for card-waving. It's one of these pet hates football fans have ingrained - is it really different to players telling the ref "surely that must be a yellow" or even appealing for a foul? Not to mention Sanchez is a keen proponent!
Generally I have a lot of respect for Messi because I've seen games where he is kicked off the park and just gets up and dusts himself off without a word. He was worse yesterday though i agree - that free-kick he bought (to be generous) on the edge of our box for example.
Also even accounting for them obviously having an off-day this Barca team is not as good as 5-6 years ago.
They have an immense front 3 who between them score and create goals with very occasional assistance. Behind that Iniesta is a shadow of the player he was and Rakitic isn't fit to lace Xavi's boots. Back then their pressing game was immense and every touch we had in the first 35 minutes was hacking it anywhere. Yesterday we looked very comfortable for 44 minutes and could easily have been ahead - we should really have got something from the game (although 2 goal loss was a fair reflection in the end).

We lost because...
"They are better than us, everybody knows that"
and the second leg......
"We are 95% out"
Thank God George didnt go to Anfield '89 instilling that attitude and needing a 2 goal win......
I heard similar comments from the Canvey Island manager after they lost at Old Trafford 4 years ago.
That's our level of expectation under Wenker. Please remind me if you've ever heard Diego Simeone talk like that before facing Barca or Madrid? And bear in mind Simeone's wage bill is about 40% of our own.

I'm not totally sure he was waving the card. I think he was more showing the ref how far his shirt had been dragged off his arm, but I may being a bit to fair to him.

Absolutely agree - messi is a genius and gets kicked from pillar to post every single season and yet you rarely see him complain, and you NEVER see him react with the petulant kick or elbow that the portugese ladyboy does.
I hate to see this imaginary card waving. It is one of the biggest cancers to attck the game of football in recent years. However it goes on all the time and our players do it as well so we cant be hypocritical about it. Lets be honest here and admit that, regardless of how annoying it was seeing messi looking for coquelin to be booked, it was a cynical stupid pull back by coquelin and should be a yellow card 99.9% of the time.
I have read comments by Gooners bemoaning the lack of playacting by giroud when alba stuck his head into him - tbh I have no problem with giroud not falling down like a big pussy (I know that he would have been absolutely slated by US on here if he had), but uefa should be seen to take action here if they really want to stop that shit going on (although we know that they wont ). They actually have a prime chance here in which to send a strong message to the players and clubs.....suspend alba for the next game cos they are as good as through anyway, and although it wont impact the outcome, it will still be seen as a warning to the players for the future

What's not to get, mate? It is disgusting and totally different to being fouled and saying to a shit ref "That was a foul". Waving the imaginary card is a step beyond that. It is the equivalent of diving and feigning injury. It's unsporting and embarrassing. The fact Sanchez has done it is immaterial to it being disgusting. No matter who does it it is wrong and should be punished.
I remember Nutty grabbing Davor Suker and bollocking him for diving early in his time with us. THAT is what football should be about. If I could change only one thing in the game I'd stamp out the cheating.
So.........ten years on, have we improved? Are we "competing with Europes elite" Are we still making the same mistakes? Different players but same manager.

Sorry mate but that is absolute bollocks. I've watched most of the games he's played in and he gets lumps kicked out of him and he (mostly) just keeps going, shirks off the foul and tries to play through it. Now I'm not saying he has never dived but in comparison to other culprits there is no comparison.

Well watch him a little closer next time. His dives are usually not theatrical like the others and when he goes down he stays there still and doesnt aknowlege anyone but he does it every game. Hes just better.

You see, it's that argument I don't get. It's "hypocritical" to complain about it because a couple of our players have done it? How? I don't care who does it, it is a disgrace and they should be punished. The same with diving. It has to be punished.
And before some moron comes on with the old "Yeah what about that Pires dive against Pompey" argument - yes he dived. I've always said he dived. And he should have been punished. But that was a one off and he ended up with a reputation as a diver when real divers like Rooney and Gerard got away with it week in week out. I can forgive (if not condone) one dive as a moment of stupidity possibly stemming from frustration at being kicked and shit reffing, but it's the cynical continuous cheaters and divers that need to be stamped out.

I thought that at first when he held the sleeve up Chippy. But I rewound it and watched it again. He began to wave the hand back and forth. He was asking for the card deffo.

I have. The great thing about modern TV is being able to rewind those slo-mo shots and get a good look at the contact or lack of. Honestly, if Messi hits the ground then 99% of the time he has been tripped or hacked down. I'm not saying he's never dived but I am saying he can't be compared to the likes of Alves, Rooney, Gerard, Ladyboy, etc by any stretch of the imagination.
