The Summer 2014 TRANSFER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Shite banter as always. What do you actually contribute other than your random digs.

However many players dont just hang around on the off chance that we will sign them, its hard to have a plan when you cannot predict who will necessarily become available.

Thus not many could have foreseen Sanchez becoming available, as Suarez wasnt thought to be going late into last season.

Likewise its hard to have foreseen that Saints would self destruct as they have.

It makes no sense to hang around while (We all hope...) tieing up negotiations over a DM and see others nip in for Chambers, no sense at all.
I know you see that we can just launch bids and get players, but for whatever reason that doesnt happen, and in fairness that seems the case for all bar Citeh Chavs Real and Barcawhore/ Bayern.

One comment you often hear about us is that we are difficult to play against as we dont play "to plan" its all unpredictable. Thats when we are at our best, we all love it when its like that, we are unplayable. . You cant have it both ways really, but either way a plan isnt coming very soon, frustrating as it is at times, and great at others. (Hope this makes some sort of sense)

Fair enough - you make reasonable points but my argument is for the following reasons -

1. We are (assuming this story is true) committing time and energy into negotiating and closing this deal - this is, in my opinion at least, time, energy and focus that would be better served on securing talent in the more pressing positions (particularly the DM position)

2. We werent pressed into rushing into this deal - no other club appears to have made bids for him so the "other clubs might nip in ahead of us" argument doesnt seem to stand up and the need for urgency wasnt there

3. You cannot (and this is aimed more at 1989) ignore the price tag - 1989 went into a sexual frenzy earlier this summer at the prospect of signing aurier (sp ? ) and only a few days ago he signed for psg for half the money we are buying chambers for  How does that represent value ? I have zero problems in over-paying for players IF the players are proven quality but signing a kid with less than 2 dozen starts for 16m seems excessive to me
False.

Get a grip.

Usually when wenger spends big on British players it pays off with exception of Jeffers. Callum will probably prove to be a good signing.

I would hardly call Wright spending big. He cost around 2-6m.

Also you are mentioning a player we signed around the millennium.

I think the Ospina deal will happen but it's been apparently done for about two weeks now, what's the hold up?

And I wouldn't take Southampton fans' views on Shaw and Chambers with a pinch of salt so much as with a fucking truckload of the stuff. I had a mate who supported Blackburn who was adamant that Phil Jones was absolutely class and would straight away become first choice at either CB or CM at United.

More than 2 months after the WC squad was announced and I'm still waiting to tell me how Shaw is a massive threat going forward. Stats don't tell the full story but I'd say that 35 games 0 goals 1 assist takes some rebutting. LOL at Mourinho's comments on him though, telling everybody he demanded 100k/week is hilarious. If Mourinho starts mugging off van Gaal this year I'm quite worried I might grow to like him a tiny bit

Wish we hijacked Liverpools bid for Lovren though.

Elite how? You're not backing up any of your points.
!
If he was so elite Clyne wouldn't be ahead of him at SOTON. He has potential like so many before him who have never stepped up.

Your overrating would make a sportswriter for the Sun blush.
He was being rotated with Clyne last season. Neither was first choice.

Why don't you go to a Southampton forum and see what they think about him.
Again you are avoiding the question.

How is he elite?

I could read SOTON forums all day and I would struggle to find elite or world's best or similar phrases of the same bracket. He very well COULD be but right now he is just a young lad who needs to play more.

Furthermore, if he is as elite as you say he would keep Clyne out of the team.
His talent level is elite. Is that hard to understand?

Or do you think Wenger would spend £16m on some Average Joe? Because it would be just like him to do that?

Did you watch Chambers vs us in the 2-2 game last season? He was class. Immense work rate, technique and no nonsense tackling.
Potentially very good.

No way can you call him elite at this moment in time.

I, like others, seem to be going round in circles with you.

as was fox in the box. im not saying that if we sign chmabers its bad, im weary of the price. if he can be a decent 4th choice cb and develop it could work out well. but our priorities are being overlooked as ever.

Would've been perfect replacement for TV5. Quality CB.

Fair play to Southampton, they quietly built a great squad over the last few years. Shame seeing it all being dismantled for them.

Jay Rodriguez is immense as well. Had it not been for his injury he would likely have been on the move too.

LOL he's desperate. We don't need him though, infact I think he would be a liability with his dodgy legs.
