I should preface this with: I do think we need to buy a forward. But...

Out-and-out strikers are becoming a thing of the past, and I don't think they actually suit our style of play. Giroud is an out-and-out striker, or a number 9, and I feel that it slows us down. He gets isolated way too easily and is often marked out of games. Although it doesn't always work, our game is based on fluidity. If players interchange their positions, it makes them much harder to man-mark. Giroud simply doesn't fit in to that and I'd argue most number 9s wouldn't.

Lest we forget, through 2002-2004 we didn't really play with a number 9.

So let's look at it. Who do we have up top?

Sanchez
Walcott
Podolski
Giroud
(Sorry, I'm not counting Sanogo)

That's a decent start but I'd argue that Podolski and Giroud are extremely limited. It might be that Wenger sees Oxlade-Chamberlain and Campbell as contenders for one of the three forward positions. If so, you might find that he won't sign anyone else this summer in that position. To be honest, I wouldn't be too disappointed with that (I'd much rather see The Ox in an attacking role), though I would love to see him bring someone else in.

So, to recap; I think we should be looking at forwards. Not strikers.

Although a defensive midfielder MUST be the priority.

I am happy with whom we have bought so far, and agree with the need for a defensive midfielder.

A Centre Back too, though I think Wenger may see Chambers (who looks very likely to sign for us) as an option at centre back?

Going back to the striker discussion, at this stage of their careers it appears that Wenger sees Afobe, Akpom and Crowley as League Cup players at most.

I think he will stick with Giroud, Sanchez, Walcott and Sanogo as possibilities up front for the first team.

Campbell I cannot say, as I think Wenger himself does not know quite what we have in Campbell?
Just have to see how he plays in the Premier League, which is why I think a loan move could be on the cards for him.

You don't rate him? His stats are pretty strong and he's always been decent when I've seen him.

That said, I think he may be off to the scum.

I can see some confusion when talking about Chambo, since some use this nickname for OX too

strikes me as an arteta type signing. competent, decent, but smacks of 4th placeness, dont get me wrong arteta has done a good jib for us till his legs went last year, but he was a squad signing at best for a club of our supposed ambitions. if we want to aim at more than 4th we need to be signing better players than schnerdelin. hes done ok in the PL but hes hardly stand out.plus hes not really a true dm.

no issue with him as a squad player but imo hes hardly an upgrade on what we have there already. bender or that portugese lump would be far far better (bender by far the best solution)

Can only see this if one of Podolski or Cazorla leaving.
