I’m no fan of Almunia but I have to agree about him picking up the back-pass. The ball from Silvestre was so short the only way for Almunia to get to the ball before Rooney was to slide for it. If he’d slid in feet first he would have risked giving away a penalty, and it would’ve been difficult to kick it away from danger in that fashion anyway as he was pretty much face on so would have had to go for the ball studs up.
If we’re gonna blame anyone for that situation why blame Almunia and not Silvestre for the shocking pass in the 1st place?
Or is it compulsory for everyone to make up their mind about a player and then either constantly criticise/defend that player accordingly regardless of what actually happens on the pitch in a game? Yeah he’s not good enough to be our number 1 but yesterday he had a decent game. Get over it.
Also, I thought Fabianski deserves credit for coming on in a pressure situation like that and playing so confidently. That cross he came & claimed under pressure was probably the best bit of goalkeeping in the whole match.

Exactly. Anyone with half a brain can understand why he did it and that the backpass was poor. I presume those that do only have the half brain, would have preferred a Lehmann style dribble like against Fulham on the opening day last year.Fuzzfeast wrote:I'm not blaming Almunia for this one. He got a weak back pass from Sylvestre and with Rooney there what's he supposed to do, try and outplay Rooney by using his feet? No fucking way. If he'd tried and lost out then Rooney would have had an open goal and we would've been 1-0 down. We gave away an indirect free-kick, and I don't blame Almunia at all. It was Sylvestre's fuck-up that caused it.
Almunia might not be the world's best GK but his consistency this past year behind a mediocre back line deserves more praise than some of the shit being dished out on here
Personally thought he was erratic yesterday. Good side yesterday
1) Made a very good and critical save from Park at a time we were under pressure.
2) Came out for crosses in second half. Ok he spilled one but if he could kindly do it for 90 minutes, not 45 please.
Bad side:
1) Picked up back pass. It was a poor back pass from the otherwise excellent Silvestere but still think he should just boot it out of a throw rather then pick it up.
2) Clichy's near own goal came from a ball Almunia should be claiming on his six yard line, not leaving for his leftback to make a despairing leap.
To be honest, not sure what to make for the offside goal, fine save but didn't exactly push the ball far away, might not be his fault though.
We know what Fabianski is like, when confident he is a brilliant shot stopper who likes to come for crosses. Not overly tested this week but thought he played well, no chance for Man U goal but came out for crosses, recovered from hesitant moment to make a fine fingertip save against Fenerbache. On the other hand, we have seen how his form can collapse when confidence is low, a horror show against Spurs last year for example and his distribution is poor. Going to be vital to deal with the aerial threat of Wigan in Carling Cup and maybe will get game against Villa, vital he plays well in the few chances he gets to play

Almunia is an average keeper at best. He wouldn't get into any of the other so called European BIG clubs. Yes he pulls off the good performance but he is not consistent enough gor my liking and certainly does not command the defence with any authority.
Is it really necessary for those of you on here that don't agreee with the opinions of others to resort to calling people "pricks" and accusing them of only having "half a brain"? Yes voice your opinions, engage in debate, but there really is no need to get personal

I'm getting tired of the Almunia bashing. We know he isn't great but it isn't for the want of trying. Now, if you want to have a pop at someone then direct your attentions towards a miserable lazy bastard that thinks he's worth as much as Henry but isn't even in the same league as him. Right now I'd take Darren Bent before that tosser. At least he appears to know where the goal is.
Almunia is by no means the worst goalkeeper in the so called 'top four' of clubs. Get off his back FFS.

yeah well said spud, he's 100% imptoved from 2 years ago, i'm not totally convinced but he's made no more mistakes than anyone else in the back 5, i'm more concerned about getting our defensive midfield sorted. diaby was outstanding on saturday but we cant play 5 in midfield every week, especially against the lower teams when ade & rvp are fit.
