Next General Election

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Thats a shame would you stand again or do you still do work within the lib party?
I will be helping our local candidate in the General Election. Not sure if I'd stand again. Peopel are unbelievably rude and demanding. Most councillors give up huge amounts of time and energy for very little reward and have to deal with a fair amount of abuse. :(
Guardian reading Lib Dem - no stereotype, huh Chippy? Wink Laughing
I do read the Guardian but I am very far from the stereotype you might have of me. But then that is how the 2 dinosaur parties try to rubbish the Lib Dems.

Im not sure if i should PM this but i thought it might help with the original posters questions.... Does it frustrate you Chippy that the Libs will never get into power (in the near future anyway) so the things that you campaign for and believe in will never come to fruition?

I can imagine it must piss you off!!!

It seems a shame to interrupt Percy and his penis, :D but to answer your question. It is frustrating but I have been a member since 1973 (ooh er missus) when we could get all our MPs in Mr ****'s taxi. We now have nearly 70. We also run lots of councils around the country (Newcastle, Liverpool, Sheffield etc) and are having a much bigger impact on the national debate Iraq (we were agin it) and the credit crunch (Vince Cable was the only national politician to predict it and talk sense about it) are just 2 examples. There are also 2 scenarios which might help us.

1 At the next election there is a hung parliament which would mean one of the dinosaur parties having to ask for our help to form a government.

2 The Tories get elected at the next election and become horribly unpopular because of all the cuts they will introduce, Labour embarks on a civil war, so that at the election in 2014/15 we win seats from both and at least become the second biggest party.

I can dream. :)

There is only one way that this country could get much worse, and that is if Chippy's dream of the Lib Dems in power ever came true!! Feck me, if you thought Labour were bad, that's nothing compared to how things would be if these lentil eating, Kumbayah singing, illegal immigration accepting, criminal excusing, British tradition hating yet any and every minority group loving weirdo's got in!!

As you can tell, I've not really got any strong views when it comes to politics.

IHH I think you need a spliff to calm you down. There is a strong Lib Dem faction in favour of decriminalising drugs. :ihh: We also have a policy to allow standing at footy games. Apart from these terrible policies I would be really grateful if you could point to those policies outlined above on our website.

Please don't point me at the Daily Mail stories you have used for this tirade.

In that case, you've got my vote!! 8)

Now to the more serious bit:

Chippy mate, trust me, I wouldn't wipe my arse with the Daily Mail/Telegraph/Express/Star - even if completely out of toilet paper - let alone buy or read them.

You don't have to be a buyer/reader of them rags to hold the views I expressed above and the reason the Lib Dems are unlikely to ever get into Number 10 is because they - along with the BBC, Guardian, The Independent, Channel 4 and their other mates in the media - make ludicrous assumptions like that, rather than examine why there is a growing number of people who feel this way, and whether there is actually any validity in these peoples' fears that they are increasingly alienated from those supposedly acting on their behalf/for their benefit.

For the record, I've been a Labour man all my life but am now disillusioned with the lot of them. :banghead:

How true frank...as my my Dear Departed Grandmother - who was a staunch socialist used to say...

One government gets into power so over a period of 4 - 12 years it can bring the country to it's knees so the other party can then take over - and do the same....all politicians are back stabbing low life's...she knew a thing or three My Gran...Bless Her Soul.... :(

lentil eating, I like Dhansak. That's as close as it gets to lentil eating.
Kumbayah singing, Never.
illegal immigration accepting, Never have been never will be. However we will not demonise immigrants as being the root of all evil.
criminal excusing, Again never but we will challenge the view that the only answer is to lock everyone up and throw away the key. IHH from what I understand you break the law almost every day, and I would say that most people who contribute on here have broken the law in their youth (me included) but criminalising people is not always the best answer. However there are some people where throwing away the key is the answer.
British tradition hating No idea where this comes from.
yet any and every minority group loving weirdo's got in Yes we believe in protecting minorities.

I believe part of what you are saying (apologies if I'm wrong) is that local communities feel totally divorced from the political peocess and powerless in the face of the almighty state. We are the party of local democracy and consultation. We believe power should be exercised at the most local level so local people decide where local resources are used. Where we run councils they start local neighbourhood groups to organise community facilities. We believe in an English parliament. The English are currently disenfranchised.
"The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives."

IHH/Chippy

I understand both sides of the argument here, but basically both sides have taken perfectly rational positions too far.
