You should be ashamed

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Yeah he did, bro.
Always happy to be proved wrong by a Gunner on fire.

[quote="proudtosaythatname"]And one day I do believe it will all come good - think the wilderness years leading up to '71 and '89 and go compare with today.

The 89 team was built by George in just 2/3 years. He only took over in the summer of 86 and had to start from scratch. Within 10 months he had delivered silverware and a league title followed not long after. Kind of puts the last 5 years into perspective.

When George came in he trusted heavily in youth (Adams, Rocky, Thomas, Merson), but he merged it with experience (O'Leary, Richardson, Smith). He didn't break the bank but he brought in the right type of player with the right charachter (Bouldy, Nigel, Dixon, Smudger). We didn't have to put up with transitional periods back then. We just had a ruthless manager who got the players needed and quickly got rid of the ones who weren't up to the job.

You don't need to give me comparisons about style of play etc. I remember mocking Spurs fans in the late 80's/early 90's for saying they'd rather win nothing and play lovely football than play less attractive winning football!! I'd also add that Arsene's sides of 98, 02 and 04 played stunning football but also had a number of hard f*ckers and had the ability to close a game out.

I'm not calling for Arsene's head, but some of the excuses put up in his defence just don't wash (transition, style of play, not enough money). Four budget buys last summer of the right type of player (e.g. Richard Dunne, Scott Parker) would have seen us go close this season. As much as it pains me the Spuds will finish this season just a few points off us but it didn't take 'Arry 5 years to do that did it??

Making a mistake is not criminal. Make the same mistakes over and over again is.

Very good post. Having read a lot of tedious abuse and internicine warfare, that addresses matters with just the right perspective. The final sentence is the key given what we are looking at this coming season.
