Can you 'grade' a fan ?

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

I think louder needs to go on the c**t list. What a load of bollox he is speaking!
what is wrong with what he's said? :?
Because it’s pointless. How does where you live make you a better fan?
It’s always the arm chair fans that have these stupid views on things. It’s also a coincidence that none of you go to matches.

All fans are equal, but some are more equal than others, or so it would seem

Anyone who comes to a game and exercises their vocal chords to sing for the team is a proper fan in my book. Sadly there seems to be too few of them at some home games.

Ahhh, location : Dublin ! I understand your anger now.

(Imagine I'm shouting this post, as your so far down the ladder you may not hear me !!)

Only joking big man
As I was! Kind of...

But in all honesty I don't like the whole "superfan" thing. Do I consider myself more of a Gooner than someone else because I spend as much on a handful of games a year as a ST holder spends on 19+ games? No.

I mean, what are we trying to qualify here? Where you were born somehow makes you a "better" fan? A certain attendance figure makes you more knowledgeable? I don't buy it.

I've met "superfans" that go home and away every game every season that hadn't a clue what they were talking about when it came to football or what players would succeed or fail. Similarly I know a bloke that's been over once and he KNOWS the game inside out.

We can reverse those two examples too.

My situation is I'm now married with 2 young kids so I only get over between 2 and maybe 5 or 6 times a season now. I might get one away trip in Europe as well but equally haven't since Paris 06.

Having said that I used to get to between 12 and maybe 15 home games and one or two away back when I first started going (1990/91). I lived in Laaahhndon in 91 so got every home game in. I have spent thousands and thousands following The Arsenal over the last 20 years. So do I think some little JCL with no responsibilities and enough disposable income to make some away days is now somehow superior to me? Fuck no.

Should point out none of this is aimed at you, just "superfans" in general.

I think you need to pick that apart a bit though to be fair. If all things being equal and we all had the same responsibilities, kids, money etc, someone who chooses to go to more games than someone else IS more committed to attending Arsenal games right ? I know that is a hypothetical scenario, but in my eyes they would be. Not more of a "fan" but yes more comitted.

Similarly a guy who has that's been over once and he KNOWS the game inside out isn't more of a "fan" because he may appear to have a better understanding of the game. But he would be less "committed" if he only chooses to go once.

I don't think you can judge levels of fan, more levels of committment. Of course as mentioned above it's all down to an individual's situation. Money, marriage, kids all play a part. I don't think you should shoot down some little JCL with no responsibilities and enough disposable income to make some away days because they are showing commitment both with time and money to go to games home and away. Likewise, that doesn't automatically give them more of an opinion than someone who for personal reasons cannot do that.

I don't think louder said living in closer to proximity makes anyone a better fan, he was asking what criteria would we use to judge a fans love or commitment to arsenal.

Well I am true glory hunter and JCL. I started watching football and EPL back in 1995 before that I only used to watch the world cup. And I didn't start supporting the club until 1997 when AW joined. I used to like Wimbledon because of their club crest but in 97 I saw the cannon and fell in love :barscarf:

I read my newspaper while the games on, far more interesting. Although I have the occasional glance at the score board.

I grew up and lived on White Hart Lane, does that give me extra superfan points?

Oh sorry, I'm on the wrong forum again. Keep getting them mixed up.

yes, from those "realists" who awlays reply in an honest, considered and intelligent manner. unlike any "rosetinter", "JCL", or "AKB" who generally are the ones who throw insults around...

I posted what I deemed a valid response, and what happened ? Basement. Still I suppose if I don't like it I can go to the official can't I ? No-one forces me to come here...
