Personally I would like to see chesney in goals but if flappy is our number 1 now then imo he has to start or else we are back into the cycle of him not getting a proper sustained run in the side
It appears that I am the only one who is not in favour of fielding so many of our 1st team players
It is one thing putting out a strongish team against the scum at the swamp with the memories of 2 seasons ago still fresh in the mind but after that I would prefer to return to the previous youth policy. I agree totally that we need need to get into a winning habit but at what expense ? We have a small frail 1st team as it is so is it worth risking more injuries to try and win the beer cup ? This is a comp that we have largely treated with contempt over recent seasons (a decision I totally agree with btw) and it seems a bit desperate for us to go nearly all guns blazing now in an attempt to try and win it
Personally I would start (not in this order of course) vela, gibbs, kos, denilson and prob bendtner (
) as a necessity and then fill in the gaps around them with a mixture of youth and experience

No you're not the only one augie. I'm in the same boat.augie wrote:Personally I would like to see chesney in goals but if flappy is our number 1 now then imo he has to start or else we are back into the cycle of him not getting a proper sustained run in the side![]()

I don't normally do this but I was interested in what sort of team Newcastle would but out.
An interesting match review on Sky but basically the Toon will rest 'key' players giving preference to the PL. They also play Sunderland this Sunday.
An interesting match review on Sky but basically the Toon will rest 'key' players giving preference to the PL. They also play Sunderland this Sunday.

Last season's Championship winners rested a number of first-choice players in the third round and still managed to produce a see-saw 4-3 win at Chelsea and they will have high hopes of a repeat victory.
Peter Lovenkrands has spoken of his frustration at a bit-part role at Newcastle, but he is among a number of reserve players who are likely to be offered an opportunity to impress against Arsenal.
Tamas Kadar, Shane Ferguson and Haris Vuckic are also set to be given a chance after performing creditably in earlier rounds as Hughton aims to keep his key men fresh for Sunday's derby against Sunderland.
Sol Campbell (thigh) will miss out and the game will come too soon for Steven Taylor (shoulder) despite his return to full training.
Steve Harper (shoulder), Leon Best (ankle), Hatem Ben Arfa (double leg fracture) and Dan Gosling (knee) are still sidelined.

Your list of preferential starters is essentially the spine of the team that will play tonight, so I'm unsure why you're voicing concerns that we are going for it all guns blazing? One of Lansbury or JET will play, as will Walcott who needs a game to get fitness. There's your youth, and that only leaves 3 outfield positions left to fill anyway.augie wrote:Personally I would like to see chesney in goals but if flappy is our number 1 now then imo he has to start or else we are back into the cycle of him not getting a proper sustained run in the side![]()

Chesney should start. One to give the kid a game and also not risking our 1st choice in Flappy

Eboue - Sagna's understudy.
Gibbs - Needs games but equally is already pushing Clichy for a starting place.
Problems are at the back.
Vermaelen is 1st choice but obviously out anyway.
Squishy I'm guessing is 3rd choice and Kos is only just returning from Injury. So it's whether to play one of the two?
Djourou is 4th choice and will start.
Denilson as you've mentioned
I come back to the others....
Vela needs games and does Theo returning from Injury. So that's our winger. Bentdner has just returned also and will start.
The only places needed are the central midfield places.
1 Playmaker (ala Cesc, Nasri, Wilshire) and an overall midfielder.
So maybe Eastmond will join in the middle. Swapping with Denilson as a Defensive player and maybe with Rosicky (Again hardly a starter) giving experience. I prefer Rosicky in the middle as it's his natural position.
Diaby strangly didn't feature either on Sunday.
Not really risking anyone.
Whatever team Wenger fields tonight, against what is likely to be a weakened Newcastle side, should be capable of doing the job....
But I find that whereas in the past I've regarded the Carling Cup as a nice little Brucie bonus (i.e. its given a lot of pleasure when we win, but not the end of the world when we lose) I now have growing expectations that we'll finally win something - and am now terrified at the thought of losing..... Cesc's comments at the weekend have kind of upped the ante and the media are well aware that we now have a few more eggs in this particular basket than we normally do.
From that point of view - and supporting Augies point re-injuries - then maybe making a few changes ourselves would actually work in our favour and take a bit of pressure off......

There is an 'air' of expectation this year given the teams left. This pressure could be our down fall.
That's the worry - We really should win tonight given both teams. It was never an issue before because of the kids.
The kids have grown up now and are pushing for places. I think the squad is big enough to cope without really harming the 1st team.

I had hight hopes for him but he doesn't seem to be getting the chances.psychoangus wrote:I think Nordtveit may be starting? Probably at fullback if he does as Prof likes to blood central youngsters on the flanks, but I'd like to see how he does in central defence.
An injury didn't help him last year make his debut but then he shortly went off on loan.

Yeah, he went to the bundesliga for Nurnburg which would've helped him. He just got a big-up on Arsenal.com so I think he may make an appearance. I think he's still one of the rising stars in the pipeline; captain of Norway-U21s I think so looking good.Boomer wrote:I had hight hopes for him but he doesn't seem to be getting the chances.psychoangus wrote:I think Nordtveit may be starting? just heard a strong rumour from a pal that the starting line up is Szczesny, Eboue Koscienly Djourou Gibbs, Vela Rosicky Denzo Vela, J.e.t Niccy B. i'd be happy with that, acres of expierince! and gives Theo and Bentdner fitness boost, give Vela another crack at showing us what he can do, and Denzo aswell! and Jet
