Calum Chambers is a Gooner, Welcome to the Arsenal
Re: Calum Chambers is a Gooner, Welcome to the Arsenal
Buddy if I am spending 16m on a young kid like chambers, I would expect him to be more than a utility player. To be fair to the kid, I think that he would prefer not to be rotated at this stage of his career - if you do physiological tests then surely you would be aware of the importance of a young person feeling settled in a team, so you can list all the various positions he has played in his career to date, but the reality is that he has mainly played in defence to date.
Btw I still maintain that any DM we buy, has to have a real physical powerful presence and chambers not ready for that

welcome to the club son, all the best etc.
a lot of money for just 24 appearances, but these days being english with 50 he'd get called up and be 'an ingerlnd regula".
this one to me is understandable if he has a definite position, but it seems not. At 19 he needs to play - i can only think we a) lend him straight back out a la the chavs, or b) one of him or debuchy is going to be our new DM, CB cover or utility player, like Gilles or Pizza ?
despite the superb signing of Dirty, i'm still not sure that wonga knows what he is doing with the midfield and defence. time will tell.

It's not our money anymore, it's their money!
I don't give a rats ass how much money players cost or what wages they are on, as long as they do us proud

I'm not against this signing but you're wrong there: where do you think they get the revenue to sign these players/dole out the wages if not the fans?
It is our money, collectively. If there were no supporters to buy tickets/merchandise the club would collapse, hence the term "supporters" - that applies to both supporting the team and club.

Also if we're spending £16m here it's going to be made up elsewhere somewhere down the line.
And before anybody latches on I'm delighted we've actually found the key to the coffers. Just pointing out that even without a tight-fisted manager and board hell-bent on financial prudence or whatever they like to call it, money is ultimate a finite resource.

There is no shame in a 19 year old not knowing his best position, or his manager not knowing this.
i.e. Kolo Toure.
Much rather a young Chambers is moved around a bit to find his best position, than forced to play a position that is not his best or the most effective for us as a team.
I see Chambers offering Wenger options for now and the future, he might be the successor to Debuchy, he might be the successor to Flamini or Arteta, or he may even end up as a centre back.
I want a commanding defensive midfielder to be signed in addition to Chambers, have "campaigned" on here for that since Flamini left in 2008.
Especially as I think central midfielders (though neither a text book defensive midfielder) Diaby and Arteta will leave next summer, and I am not sure that Wenger wants to keep Coquelin for the long term either.
But I know that a defensive midfielder does not always have to be 6 foot 3 and 14 stone to be effective - Mascherano at about 5 foot 9 and medium build would be an incredible signing were he available.
Temperament, positional sense, tackling ability, accurate passing and stamina all play their part.

Re: Calum Chambers is a Gooner, Welcome to the Arsenal
i just got home and watched the video.
blimey.
he's quick, stays on his feet and seems to be a quicker thinker than those around him. he also seemed always looking to pass forward and beat his man.
he tackled well and positionally he looked like he knew what he was doing - again not diving in but cutting off the man or ball.
he looks like he could be a superb attacking RB or he's going to take ox's place or even walcotts.
lets hope he stays fit, keeps his head down and works hard - those reels can be misleading but it looks like he's a talent.
nice one.

Peoples obsession with transfer prices always make me laugh. The market dictates the cost of a player, not us or even Arsenal. Chambers is a highly rated young english defender. He wouldn't be signed for anything less. Now do you want Wenger to pay cheaper prices for young foreign players, or would you like him to sign a young English player for a little bit more?

Calum Chambers quote about Wenger and his position:augie wrote:Buddy if I am spending 16m on a young kid like chambers, I would expect him to be more than a utility player. ...He said that he sees me at right back, centre back, holding centre midfield. He sees me in a variety of different positions, which I like, because then I can find out where I am best at and push myself as far as I can go in that position. I’m just excited to get started really.

It baffles me that people are moaning about spending money when we've been wanting them to spend money all along.rigsby wrote:Peoples obsession with transfer prices always make me laugh. I don't care of it's 16M, the money side shouldnt bother any supporter when we pay these ticket prices, rather see it spent than for the 'powder to be kept dry'

Yes but that 16m will be made up somewhere else, be it selling players or passing on other players in the future.Gunnersaurus wrote:It baffles me that people are moaning about spending money when we've been wanting them to spend money all along.rigsby wrote:Peoples obsession with transfer prices always make me laugh. I agree that getting quality players in is first and foremost aim, and we have saved enough over the last few years to splurge a bit but its not exactly irrelevant or inconsequential that we have 16m less than the day before (in crude terms).
