Champions League Draw

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Said we had a chance, not that it's a guarantee.

I currently live in Baltimore and was born in Boston, Massachusetts. I started supporting Arsenal because my maths teacher in school was a gooner and also our football coach. We had training called off one day because there was too much rain and the pitch would be destroyed. So he took the team inside to watch the one champions league match that american television showed per matchday. That day was March 28 2006 (Who'd we play, big man? No cheating now). From there, I was hooked. I've followed Arsenal all over England and Europe so please don't get precious about "deluded yank gooners". It's extremely boring.
Juve, and I didn't need to google it

Hahahah. Hilarious, do the levels of plasticness of our overseas fans have no bounds. Your asking me who we where playing seriously when you was on the wrong side of the pond and I was in the clock end watching Henry skin PV, and probably the most famous Bobby Pires tackle of all time when he slid in versus Paddy and took the ball clean away, starting a counter attack. This is why our club has been ruined, it has been infiltrated by people that don't know what it means to be a gooner. It's a trophy tag.

So you are seriously telling me that on a run to the CL final that you caught the bug fuck me. If you said something like when Johnny Jensen scored his first goal for Arsenal I could identify with that or Paul Davis broke Glenn Cockerills jaw, but your reply just sums up how much our American cousins know fuck all about football. Replace that Juve game with our appalling effort versus Dynamo Zagreb last season and would you even blink an eyelid for our shower of a club, somehow I doubt it.

By the way, I am at pains to point out that Arsenal have loads of overseas connections in places like Ireland and Scandinavia through players that have worn the badge and been coveted by the fans. That coupled with a huge Irish population in north London many of whom are die hard gooners who know their football.

Going back to your original point whilst this isn't the toughest group PSG are a major force in CL football these days and Basel are no mugs either. Underestimate them at your peril.
I didn't know the champions league from the world cup at the point. I was a kid in secondary school who loved playing football and liked the way Arsenal played.

Do I not know what it means to be a gooner? I've stood in the away end at Brisbane Road, the Britannia, the Camp Nou and Selhurst among others. I spend 2x the cost of a season ticket on one trip where I see only 2-3 matches. It's because I love the club. When I come over, I have no desire to attract special credit or attention to myself (unlike many other American gooners) and just want to go down the pub with many of the hugely welcoming gooners I've met over the years. Shame you're not capable of being one of them.

By the way, PSG are a "major force" in the Champions League? They've made one semifinal in the history of the competition and that was in 1994-95.
They are these days, have you not seen how much spending power they have? You can be sure they have a better chance of winning the fucker than we have.

As for your comment about the WC, I despair.................

If he supports the Arsenal fair enough....so what he is from the states, we can't all be Super fans....Good luck to you mate :D
Being a fan/super fan is irrelevant. I don't care where you are from personally if you can hold a decent footy conversation. Sadly over this summer I have seen so many examples of how clueless US footy fans are. That youtube vid is just an example.

If you are going to come on a forum like this and give it the large about a said date in history, trying to look all clever then you are asking to get shot down - especially if the person you where directing that comment to remembers the game like it was yesterday!

They've made the quarterfinals and no further since that money came in. The same as Benfica, Monaco, Galatasaray and Malaga. Not quite a major force with those peers, are they?

Not sure what is so disparaging about the World Cup comment, I was a kid growing up in a country where football was probably the 7th most televised sport nationally yet still loved it more than any other.

Changes starting 2018/19: http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague ... 98899.html
A new system for the club coefficients: clubs will be judged on their own records (deletion of the country share for individual club coefficient unless that coefficient is lower than 20% of the association's coefficient).
Historical success in the competition will also be acknowledged in coefficient calculation (points for previous European titles with a weighted system for UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League titles)
Goodbye pot 2

On the bright side, 4th place becomes even more of a trophy now that you don't have to go through the playoff

Good draw...looks like second is the best we can hope for.

Leicester must be laughing even louder after their draw, they look almost certain to get to last 16.

Let's just make this perfectly clear, Arsenal haven't even got close to the 1/4 finals for how many years? PSG are work in progress if you throw money at a football club these days, it sticks eventually. It was a blow for them to lose Ibra but for sure they will be going for big signings unlike Arsenal, as we are seeing this transfer window.

With regards to the WC your country had the fucker in 1994, and still didn't embrace the sport. It's ridiculous that the WC has been played more recently over there than in England.

now i don't agree with NFG much and the vitriol isn't called for, but PSG are far better than arsenal, ever since the Arabs bought them and spent millions. we may beat them at the bowl but they could dick us over there.

they should win the group easy

re. fans and super fans i disagree with NFG about American fans , but would say there is a slight difference between fans (of whichever nationality) that made a conscious decision to support arsenal, rather than those who had it thrust upon them through family/friends/history/proximity.

but then where does that choice become conscious, a little kid choosing to support us from a family of no football allegiance is different again to a teenager deciding to support us i suppose, as a little kid isn't a rational decision as it is for someone a bit older.

still all gooners ultimately.

This is probably my favourite Bobby Pires moment (perhaps the duff pen comes close). Think I can honestly say 36,000 Gooners where absolutely stunned at the clean tackle, and for him to come away and the look on paddy's face was priceless. He looked like he had just been mugged!

For those of you wondering what to wear to European away games, there are some 'Prepare for a European Tour' T-shirts going very cheap over at the West Ham shop.
