SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not sign

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

amazing how much money Villa generated from some average to crap players
wouldn't Milner, Barry, Ashley Young and Downing each have broken our transfer record!?

Could have added Benteke to that list, if some on here had got their way

The Milner deal alone would have kicked the living shit out of our transfer record, and then dragged it into an alley for some backdoor abuse.

So Luis Gustavo wants to join the Arsenal.................You know that's your cue to cock it right up Ivan.

Go on you know you want to, give Luis every reason to say I'd rather join mid-table Wolfsburg than come to The Arsenal

Barry (aged 28 at the time) for £12m.
Downing (aged 26) for £20m.
Young (aged 25) for £17m.
Milner (aged 24) for £26m plus Ireland*

The last one is even crazier when you consider that Chelsea got Mata (aged 23, WC winner) for £23m and Man City got Silva (aged 24, WC winner) for £24m. We have to get Aston Villa's transfer negotiators  If they could get £26m for Milner, how much would they have got for Cesc?

*the player not the country

It's a shame, as he can play, but it just doesn't work out for some players. One to avoid I reckon.
22m Lyon paid. I think its his wages more than anything - hence the 'pay cut'.

i'd take him for 50k a week - then we can put sick note rosicky out to grass...some competition for carzola wouldn't be a bad thing as his form did dip last year in the middle.

dreaming now, but gustavo and gourcuff in the middle would allow Jack to play just behind Giroud or Podolski in the Cesc hole. with Santi on one side and wally the other.

though of course, wenger is more likely to put Gustavo on the wing and play Gourcuff left back :banghead:

I actually rated Ireland - thought he could be a Ljungbergesque player. Engine, movement and goals.
Was totally wrong about that!

Yeah, what's the story with Stephen Ireland? - he looked a real menace, but has disappeared altogether in recent seasons.

Reminds me of Lee Bowyer. The guy used to be very effective at Leeds, then his form fell through the floor :?

Wenger went three months without spending a penny, it would be terrible shame to spend money now when there is only four days left till start of new season.

Weird as it may sound, I think he really suffered once his alopecia occurred (I can relate) and it battered his confidence. I also think he needs an arm around him and a lot of his employers haven't exactly been backwards in coming forwards when questioning his attitude.

I reckon big things were expected and he either had trouble living up to the hype, that or he thought he'd made it and stopped trying.

It can all be traced back to the dead granny(s) having a child summer.

Joke of an article. "Napoli are not a club you can turn down".

Apparently his actual agent has said that he's going to make a statement on his future Thursday. If he gets the option he'll come to us over Napoli.
