Can anyone remember us ever going into the first game of the season having not spent a single penny on transfer fees?

I think it was 96/97 when after siging Lukic back on a free and being linked with many players we signed no one and had no manager. This was the time that Sheringham was quoted as saying they were "having a laugh at the Arsenal" due to our crisis.
Even though it felt like a crisis at the time it did turn out okay. This time however I think we are in the shit.

Is this the equivelent of preparing for a long car drive by having bald tyres, broken windscreen wipers, negligible brake pads, exhaust manifold scraping the tarmac, and a broken tail light, yet still insisting it will be fine, while having a disposable £1m in the trunk?
Keep it civil chaps, its only a game, we dont want another shutdown.
