The Summer 2014 TRANSFER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I have just been watching Sky Sports News and they showed old Porridge's face press conference today where he talked about his transfer business -

Reporter - "Harry, Can we play the name game?"

Porridge face - "yeah, why not"

The reporter then threw names at him and the classless *word censored* then went on to talk about and unsettle every player his two bob club have been linked with this summer.
As much as Wenger pisses me off (which is a lot) at least he acts with a bit of respect for others by refusing to talk about potential transfers to the press until the deal is done.

Couldnt agree more - the fact that he is "good old 'arry" the media will give him a free pass on this, but any foreign (and some english) manager would be crucified for it. It was noticeable that he was acutely aware of not upsetting the scum when he said townsend was their player  In recent days they have been heavily linked with leroy fer but if I was fer I would prefer to go to southampton (who are also after him) than join qpr - qpr are a real dads army club with a manager putting no longer term structure in place and that, along with the fact that southampton have better facilities and a dutch manager, would be enough to convince me to join them. In recent years I have felt that qpr are a club that are stuck in the 70s with their shitty little ground and lack of serious prospects/ambition, and to me they just seem to be happy to be in the top flight again - I used to like qpr back in the 70s too

According to Spanish outlet AS, Arsenal have made a €63.5m bid for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani which should be enough to persuade the French outfit to sell.

Cavani had been tipped to leave PSG this summer after complaining about having to play out on the wing and the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man Utd were all linked with a move at one point or another.

According to reports in Greece, Arsenal have secured the signing of Olympiacos defender Konstantinos Manolas. A fee of around of £8 million is reported to be the fee that would take him away from the Greek Super league.

WENGER OUT
Manolas has been left out of the Olymipiacos squad due to play a friendly against Atletic Bilbao and with Luisao having signed a 3yr contract with Juventus, that possibly ends their interest.

Napoli striker Eduardo Vargas has been left out of the Napoli squad for their champions league qualifier against Bilbao to prevent him being cup tied in the champions league. He is being courted by both Arsenal Fc and Valencia cf but the north London club are thought to have edged ahead.

From this morning's press conference:
Arsene on new signings

"I'm happy with the players I've signed. Will I still do something? I don't rule it out.

"Our finances are still healthy but we want to go through to CL Group stages and then see.

"What is a big signing? For you, it's the size of the fee. For me it's the quality of the player."

AW also said he was happy with the strikers we have and indicated that he wasn't about to buy another one which is a big shame as we need it.

The expectation is that Walcott and Alexis will ensure that doesn't happen.

Who didn't see this coming - despite Wenger trying to kid us he was still after a couple more players? He thinks he can get away with Chambers and Monreal as cover at CB (ala Sagna) and Flamini/Diaby as the alternative DM. :banghead: :banghead:

In Wenger's mind we don't need any further strengthening - although if a real bargain (see what I - unintentionally - did there? ) comes up, he may be tempted to go for it.

He hasn't said we won't sign anyone else.

Man United start the season having lost Evra, Ferdinand and Vidic and have replaced them with an injured boy from Southampton. There is still weeks left of the transfer window.

It is that very term 'Expectation' that hs been the downfall of many - Or as it has oft been said "Expectation and Assumption are the Mother of all F*ck Ups" - And as we all know - we have had a prolonged (over the past 7 seasons) periods of players being injured long term, and even when a player returns there is always a further period of adjustment - till they regain full fitness free from other injuries.

Mind you wenger having been in football for some 31 years now knows better than everyone else. :?

I'm not in the least interested in what state manure or any other club find themselves...What I am interested in is the players/squad we have - that will allow us to seriously and realistically challenge for the Prem Title this season...and it seems that whilst wenger has signed atop player in Alexis Sanchez - and a potential 'future' defender in Chambers - he still has not attended to the flaws which saw us crash and burn last season - regardless of excuses for injuries we suffered last season - he should know that injuries do and will occur...AND that we still need a World Class Striker , a CB and a DMF...
