SUMMER TRANSFERS - Your thoughts on who did and did not sign

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

We are running round giving out low ball bids to all and sundry ,It’s a game of Poker and who blinks first loses.
Wenger has convinced himself that prices are going to come a tumbling down the closer we get to the end of the window.
Problem is everyone in the market knows we are short so we are dealing from a position of weakness being short in all departments .
With Chelsea upping the ante over the God forbids yesterday inflation will only rise further and we will always be 2 steps behind .
I only hope that Flamini gets a pay as u play contract in case of long term injury ………………..AGAIN !

What do you make of Flamini? Strong character, who makes no bones about it being all about himself, but if he's still up to the job physically, could do a job as a squad player. It doesn't seem to have been any deliberate action on Wenger's part, so more evidence of the lack of any transfer planning.
I just can't believe how the AKBs seem to think there were special rules in place preventing only Arsenal from making any signings this summer, until we'd "qualified for the CL group stages". The lot with the chicken on their chest have managed just fine.
I have to completely disagree about Soldado. He's pretty consistent but not really prolific - last season was the first time he'd registered 20 league goals in his entire career despite no real injury problems. Not saying he's necessarily as good a player but if Defoe was starting 35 league games a season he'd be knocking in about the same number of goals as Soldado has been.

He's nowhere near world class, he's 28 years old and he set them back £26m. That's just the current market price for that sort of player, but it's not really a bargain. Villa, Gomez and Higuain were all far better value imo (and Llorente went on a free!). I also think that Neymar at less than double the price is better value, and there are probably quite a few others I'd add to that.

Llorente will never be a 20 goal a season striker imo

Your point about soldado never being a 20 goal a season striker is understandable but I would counter that by pointing out that goals are easier come by in the more open English game - he will get more chances and more goals imo so might turn out to be a bargain IF he settles in there

LLorente's not played at all for a year either, due to Athletic refusing to let him go or to play him. Think that's why Juve also signed Tevez.
Soldado will probably settle. He's a very strong character, slightly crazy sometimes but is at his peak now. Well, we'll see anyhow.
Just don't know who is still around that AW can sign either. Benzema?! Strongly doubt it anyhow, and Benzema may be very talented but has a history of going missing when under pressure.

I hear Chelski are getting Willian. Wonder if someone will have to leave for that.

Perhaps we could try for: Lukaku or Mata. Don't want Ba or any African TBH.

If Man Utd do a deal for Rooney, they'd be mugs not to get Mata.

Lukaku won't be going anywhere.

Ba on the other hand has chronic knee problems so...kerching! :barscarf:

I am sick of Africans going absent for 2 months just when we need them most because of ACON.

So you'd have said no to Drogba in his pomp?

Drogba and Yaya Toure aren't typical though (not to mention we cannot buy them). Most are just average mediocre players who excel in speed and strength.

Fair enough. Would agree with you on that.

Wasn't the last ACN the last one to be played in winter? I think they're moving to summer from now on

Nope. According to Wikipedia, the next three ACNs (2015, 2017, 2019) are going to be played in winter. The 2015 one is definitely in winter:

"The CAF Executive Committee also confirmed the dates of the final phase of the upcoming Orange Africa Cup of Nations - Morocco 2015 to be held from Saturday January 17th to Saturday February 07th 2015."

Why do they hold it every two years?

Playing football tournament in Africa's heat during the summer? I don't think so.

Wenger tightlipped over Flamini deal

Arsène Wenger is remaining tightlipped over a rumoured deal to bring Mathieu Flamini back to the Club.

The former Arsenal midfielder has been training at London Colney after leaving AC Milan at the end of last season.

There has been speculation he will be offered a contract by Wenger, but the manager refused to confirm anything was imminent.

"He is just here to work on his fitness and he does that very well," he said. "I don't say there is no chance and I don't say there is a chance of him joining."
