THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Perhaps now those fields of corn will be left fallow for a year, with a bumper crop promised the season after.

Enjoyed this post.
Not as much as a sausage sarnie with cheese and brown sauce mind, but an above average post round these parts imo. 8)

Yup! that's definitely one of those kind of posts one could nail a "Wanted Sign" on.

He did.

I'm sure all managers do it, but as a rule of thumb, it's best to ignore pretty much everything Wenger says as he very rarely gives his real opinion on things unless he's moaning about Stoke :?

This from F365 yesterday
"Robin scored 30 goals last season and you want to keep your best players. He was player of the year in England. We want to keep him. I cannot tell you more at the moment because I don't know more. We have not bought the players to replace Van Persie, but to strengthen our squad with the thinking Van Persie will stay. That's still my mind at the moment" - Arsene Wenger, August 13.

"We have already recruited since we bought (Olivier) Giroud and (Lukas) Podolski who originally were intended to offset the departure of van Persie" - Arsene Wenger, August 15.

That's Wenger for you.

Sadly, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

'my mind at the moment' reveals more of his hand than I would choose to...
simply dont understand the bizarre obsession people have on here with the club compromising their transfer market dealings in order to massage their egos

Yeah, you could argue "my mind at the moment" is ambiguous enough to throw doubt over whether he's misleading people, but in all honesty, I think the general message he's putting across is clear enough.

I think there's ways of holding information back without endlessly misleading the fans. Perhaps the above example isn't the best, but there can be little doubt that anything Wenger says in public should be taken with a pinch of salt, as it doesn't necessarily reflect his true thoughts.

I understand why he does it, but I think some other managers strike the balance far better.

Still, I made peace with that years ago. I only comment on it here because there's a thread dedicated to it.

you're confused if you think the rest of the league is doing better...

Wenger retains confidence because he hasnt EVER failed to achieve the clubs minimum target: CL football
we've normally challenged for trophies but didnt last year
even though last season was a failure in those terms, we did improve from 4th to 3rd

Just mute the tv when he comes on, that's what I do. That way you can save yourself the bother of the manager of YOUR football club lying straight to your face. :banghead:

Complete tosh. Why is 4th the minimum target? Wenger claims we go for the title every year. So he's either a liar or he's failing at his job. Which one do you want?

I don’t see them as being mutually exclusive to be honest.
