maths history politics and for the last im chosing economics or geography - im thinking which is better!!!
what do you think
I would say economics as it goes very well with history and politics. also, imo, geography would be alright if it was just human geography but physical geography is so boring

I understand both sides of the argument here, but basically both sides have taken perfectly rational positions too far.
IHH and I have had a few debates in the past. I think it is fair to say we are the two most rational people on here. (God help us all)

Come General Election time I've often voted Liberal/LibDem/Social Democrat.

It's great. I have shown an interest in politics. Done my bit as a responsible citizen. And I can't possibly be blamed for the shortcomings of any future government. :D

On a serious note, my local Lib people are elected more times than not. Because they are good at what they do.

Dont really know what to do when it comes to an election. Grew up in a Tory safe house seat....live in Eastboure which is well....as Tory as you can get...so lived all my life with a Tory MP...would love to have a Labour MP in my area...will never happen.

Want LAbour to stay in power because the Tories scare the shit out of me.....The Lib Dems (sorry Chippy) are just not cutting the mustard in Eastbourne, the candidate is a softie and quite frankly will never take the seat of Nigel Waterstone.

Would like to live in Lewes though...very good MP in Norman Baker....seems to look after his constituency.....oh bollocks...politics is bull

Norman Baker is my local MP.

Seems to be good at his job. Which is the best you can hope for. My daughter had some dealings with him. She asked him to look at a particular issue. He did it. She got loads of official letters from both sides of the House.

For those who are not aware, if you write to your local MP, they HAVE to respond. By law.

Given some of the contributors to the forum, I'm not sure if I should take that as a compliment!! :?

Believe it or not, my first post was only meant to wind you up Chippy.  The following one was a bit nearer the truth of what I believe - although I had no intention of getting drawn into a serious political debate. After reading your reply about 'local democracy' I've since written at least three other posts, which I subsequently deleted when I realised that I was about to do exactly what I was trying to avoid!! :banghead:  As the girlfriend said to me as I tried to slip her one in the arse whilst she was asleep: This isn't the right time or place!!

Although I've had a long-term interest in it, the truth is I'm in too much of a depressed state (due to the Eduardo bad publicity/hypocrisy and our lack of transfer activity) to get involved in trivial things like politics!!

TBH I don't want to get involved in a long political debate on here either. 8) I think politics is at a very low ebb at the moment and people's anger is very understandable.

Sammy I'm surprised you think we won't take Eastbourne as it is one of the most marginal seats in the country. With the boundary changes the notional majority is only 755. If you want to restrain the Tories you are one of the few people in the country whose vote will actually count! :(

Hope you have time for this .
As people after the war we had Macmillan and Eden and by comparison to the war years things were getting better and we were doing o.k. Then we got Wilson with Healey as his chancellor and the money we had got spent and we went cap in hand to the I.M.F. but the unions wanted more and more and went on strike for it. The tories got back with Heath but the strikes continued and Jim callaghan arrived and the union power increased. Thatcher got in and fought the unions the EEC and the Argentinians. She grew the money reserves in the wake of breaking the T.U.C. Major took over and it was more of the same although he had the drain of the Gulf war he was not very charismatic and an American type campaign by Blair blew him away and Blair took over with Brown as Chancellor. They brought in no end of social policies and immigration and sold off all of our gold reserves to pay for them. They followed America into Iraq and Afghanistan and effectively bankrupted the country. Brown took the poisoned chalice and has effectively devalued the pound by about 30%. The Tories will return at the next election inherit the debt and will tax heavily to raise cash. The people won't like it and will vote them out at the first opportunity and labour will be back on promises of Jam tomorrow.
As I go into my 62nd year this is a précis of my take on Westminster in my lifetime. Usually when young: people tend to lean towards socialism and as they get older they get more likely to protect whatever assets they have acquired and move more to the right.

Can't argue with any of that Potter, but would like to add that getting into the common market in, errmm 1973 wasn't a good move either.

Ok, it was done on a referendum, which just sneak through, but it was never sold that way in 1973, to the money leaking, grabbing beast it is today..

At the risk of starting another debate, that's about the only bit of your analysis I agree with.

I have voted Labour at every election that I have been able to vote in.

I believe in a good state benefit system to support those who really need it - I now believe Labour have given us a system that supports wasters over the average hard working person.

I believe in the NHS - Not some system that employs more admin and managers than it does Doctors and Nurses (How does that work?)

I believe in greater participation in Europe as I think this is the only way forward - I don't want to lose the fact the I am English/British though.

I thought Labour did a great job for years, but like other posters have said, they do seem to have stagnated.

However, the recent expenses scandal has completely depressed me with regards to politics and until it has cleaned up, I will never vote for anyone again. I have felt sick when I see some of these people even defending themselves? I'm completely fed up with everything
